Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Well I got my first egg yesterday from my pair of swedish flower hens. My goal is to get more. Have been trying to get a hold of the person I got my hen from but no luck yet. Will probably right them a letter to see about some more eggs or just purchase more from others to get more blood. My pair are from 2 different people so off to okay start. From all I have been reading they would be considered splash based correct?

Not best of pictures but will try to describe them also. Roo Top picture. He was primarly white with few specks of blue in him. Know he has red in his wings and still some blue here and there. He is about 8 months or so. I thought he was a she for long time. Hen: she is blue with red and gold in neck and some white and black. She is not quite 6 months old yet.
he is a splash (aka splashes of blue here and there without any regularity) and the hen is a blue... offspring will be blue or splash based. i find the blues much more colorful than splash, but then again, that's why i have the mille and blue mille bantam cochins. same basic colorations in a compact fluffy-butt breed. LOL

with both breeds, i tend to prefer a black based roo over black and blue hens, giving me black and blue based chicks.

Thanks still new to this breed but really like them so far. sweet and forage really good. So anyone know is blue in this breed is the same as others. Like with marans blue X Splash = 50% blue 50% Splash. Or just crap shoot since they do not breed true color wise?

I have a non SFH question. I am working on a mottled/flowered EE project. Tomorrow I am choosing what hens to keep and one is a maybe. Is this flowering or just stray white?
400

She is an EE x wellsummer and has 12 or so feathers with just the tips white.

does she have any mottling in her lines? it's possible it could be mottling or it could be something else. nutrition can cause feather changes too sometimes.

She's a secondhand hen so I'm not sure of her background. The spots have been there through a full molt. Her diet has been good while I've had her (6months) and she just finished molting. I would hold on to her if there is a good chance its genetic.

well, if it's been there thru a whole moult, then I'd say she's probably got a bit of mottling... not sure what else it would be. try breeding her to a mottled bird and see what you get.

Hi SFH fans! I've seen these before, but didn't pay much attention as I preferred non single combed chickens. But with going to Barnevelders and wanting another colorful well tempered breed, I've been drooling over SFH for the last few hours, lol.

I'm in WI, there is a small hatchery (Our Fly Babies) that raises them, any experience with them at all? (you can email me privately at [email protected] if you want).

Otherwise I'd love to ship in 15+ eggs or 12 chicks ASAP when it warms up a bit. I'm open to driving up to 4 hrs one way to pick some new chicks or eggs too (don't want started birds as I've had to cull my flock 2x in the past due to dishonest sellers). I'm in central WI.

Thanks!

edited....thanks for the heads up on OFB, looking for another source!
