Swedish Flower Hen Thread

well I got my first confirmed sfh eggs today. they've been free ranging but I was late letting them out today and 2 of the 3 girls had already laid in the box when I went out (blue was actually laying as I stood there waiting LOL) so they'll get marked and set when I set the next batch of eggs. see if the girls have been fooling around or faithful to their guy.

I'll tell you one thing I learned after being around over three dozen blommehons over the past two and a half years.

If you have ONE that is flighty, it teaches the others. The seven in my backyard all fly to me (sometimes over a four foot fence) because they're in too much of a hurry to run around obstacles. Things were fine until an eight week old started roosting on the exposed edge of a 5.5' screen door to a shed. Since then, they've all learned her habits.

With that being said, they don't fly over fences to escape unless they become very frightened. And I've only seen that happen twice, which was pretty bad because they can't figure out how to fly back over the fence to return. Also, I didn't handle them when they were young, so they don't let me pick them up. So yeah, lots of luring with cracked corn. Lots of cussing. Good times.

mine aren't handled much, but they are underfoot every chance they get. LOL I'd rather have them spaz at predators than be nonchalant about it. the babies get more handling, but only because they're inside and get fed multiple times a day. opening the brooder results in several launching themselves at me and usually landing on the feed bags or floor, picked up and put back in the brooder once the food is in there. LOL

Is there anyone who plans n attending the Unifour chickens show on March 1 in Rowan County, NC? I am hoping to be able to meet someone there and get some SFH eggs, chicks, started, or adults to avoid the shipping costs.

well, I found it... it's over 3 hour drive for me... the forsyth fanciers show later in march might be a bit more do-able for me, since ti's a lot closer.

I'm phasing out my SFHs and have a pair for sale. The cockerel is 6 months old, a crested, traditional red/black millefleur. The hen is 18 months old, also crested and is the gold hackle black mottled. Both are direct from GFF. $40 for the pair. Unfortunately I don't ship adult chickens. We're in Virginia. If I don't sell them at a local swap before, they will be available at Gilmanor in May.

I would have gotten the pair if you were closer but you are 4 hours from me. If you wanted to get rid of them just to re-home them and would be willing to pay shipping, I would buy them from you.

Just flip on your lights and you can slice a good 45 minutes off the trip ;]

But yeah, anyways, I might be selling off some eggs or babies this year for competitive prices if there's enough interest. Not interested in stepping on any toes though.

I am interested in all opinions and options given to me. I will take some eggs or chicks. My big thing is I want to find local people so I don't have to worry about those dang shipping prices and handling.
