Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Quote:
well, I just felt I should pass it along.

and circumstances worked out, I put the bale of cox shavings into the back of the explorer, noticed no dome light came on. hm... went around to see if the dome light switch was off. nope. *CRAP* battery died again. good thing to find it now, not in the morning when I'm getting ready to head down to Wytheville for the npip training class... got the battery minder on it charging up overnight. dang thing did this to us a couple times now. always after sitting for a few days after last opening the rear window to get groceries out. I think the switch might be flaky or something. hoping it didn't kill the battery, just drained it.

I'd like to add a few Swedish Flower Hen chicks to my flock, and don't have enough room in the incubator for shipped eggs.
The closest person is over 100 miles away, so the gas to travel there to pick up chicks would be as expensive as shipping chicks.

I'm going to be incubating eggs from my flock within a week or less,
and I'd prefer to have the SFH chicks arrive in the mail when mine hatch (around April 6-10th).

I'm not sure how many, but am tentatively thinking of 12 chicks, so I can pick out my favorites and don't end up with all roosters.

So, if anyone is going to hatching out SFH around the same time, and will have enough to ship some, please send me a PM, along with this info:
Price per chick
Min. # of chicks to ship
Estimated shipping cost to "Delhi, NY 13753"
Cost of box, etc, so I know the total estimate

If you have photos or details on your breeding stock, that would appreciated as well.

Thank You!

A few of my SFHs plus Crested Cream Legbars enjoying the warm sun today.

OK, time again for the SFH experts to render an opinion. Here are pictures of recent chicks. They are just over a week old now.

Brown chick: Looks like a pure SFH to me.

Black chick: Looks like one of Karen's "Penguins"

Your thoughts? Pure SFH or not? The cream legbar and EE roos have been out of the layer flock since the beginning of February. I am keeping my Swedes penned with the layer flock.

At this point I can tell you I have had tons of pure SFH chicks that looked exactly like those two. So far so good. See how they grow out and send more pictures. (Remember - those penguin chicks can have dark mottled legs, so don't let that throw you as it matures.)

What kind of hatches do you all get from shipped SFH eggs? I got 0 out of seven eggs- trying to decide if I want to try buying more eggs, or have chicks mailed.
I ordered a doz. eggs and they were lost in the mail for 9 days. I still got 2 chicks from them. I think it's just a roll of the dice.

could be... give them a couple weeks and you should start seeing white on the shoulders or breast feathers.
