Okay my little lone chick turned the corner this weekend and now she's a tiny terror. She's going to a new home this weekend to live with some newly hatched chicks. So now I'm ready to give hatching SFH another shot:

Seeking SFH hatching eggs for pick-up within a 2-hour drive of the Atlanta, Georgia area! (Willing to travel farther for good color variety.)

I hope it's okay to hijack this thread. I know there are several people out here that breed SFHs, so I am hoping to get some help in deciding which two of these five roos to keep. The first three are 5 months old and the last two are about three weeks older. There are two moms....a pretty black hen and a nice silver hen. I posted their dad out here before and the last photo reminds me of him, so I'm leaning toward this one a bit since I gave his dad up to try and appease the neighbors. I need to make a decision soon before they begin to really crow. Right now, they sound pretty pitiful, but I am sure they will be getting there soon. They have lost a few tail feathers, etc. from fighting a bit, so I separated a few of them.

Aaaahaahaahaaaaaa!

Ironically, someone drove up from south of Atlanta just a couple months ago and bought a whole bunch of chicks from me... got one of every color I had (it was a LOT of chicks).

You know? It's just too hard to tell from photos unless you have each of the boys posed exactly the same way - profile, etc.

I'll say this -

Watch them. Look for the one(s) with the deepest, roundest chests. Look for the ones whose bodies flow neatly - from neck to back, back to tail, neck to chest, etc. Look for good wings (exclude any with split wing). Wings should normally be held high and tight. The primaries should be held parallel to the ground most of the time. Exclude for things like squirrel tail or comb sprigs (if your best bird has a small comb sprig, then it might be worth over-looking).

Here's the shape I look for in my own birds:

Not a keeper (but he threw some beautiful chicks when paired with deep-chested, round girls:

This one looks like he may have split wing. Did you check them for it?
