Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Even though I gave the boys the outdoor pen during the day, they were still pacing the fence constantly. So I rigged a bit more and added the dog house down at one end so they had a shelter with it too. After they figured it out, they went right in and relaxed...coming and going as they pleased. It seemed to make them feel much more at home and in control of the situation.

I really believe that stress is what makes for chinks in the immune system. After going through shipping then being in unfamiliar surroundings, new food, and strange people (that would be me

), I'm glad that the dog house seems to have brought them a place of calm.

This is a poor photo but you can see the dog house down there at the end.

Was working on the pole barn power washing the floor where the winter kennels will be set up so I didn't have time to get a better photo.

Tonight when I put them back in their garage pen for the night, they both went and got on the little rigged roost I had made for them. This is the first night they've gotten on the roost. The previous nights they were on the floor and last night in the dust box. Sounds like they're getting more at ease with the new situation.

Here's my little pullet, Trixie. She laid her first egg today! It was a pretty decent size for a first egg. The only thing was, it was streaked with blood on the outside of the shell. I haven't had this happen before, so hopefully she's ok.

I have to confirm what the others have said- no concern. I´ve had that happen quite a few times to first time layers, too. You do feel sorry for them, though.
Bulldogma- thanks for the contact info!
THeelChickenKY- you have some beautiful birds there!
Melabella- that roo is gorgeous, but he looks like he knows that already!
KYTinpusher- You´ve just tempted someone gone clean. I´ve already put the 6 eggs my girls laid today into the bator, and just because I was curious if it would work, I put in 4 from the fridge, too.

LisaLouHoo, I have a Dominique hen who often lays double yolkers and whenever she does this, there is a decent amount of blood on those giganto eggs! She's done this without a problem for about a year now.

I am ruining this chick. I can tell already it's gonna be a lap chicken. I open the roof and it comes running. It absolutely loves to be held and bitches when I put it back. My dogs love it, and you should see my 80 lbs Boxer protect it.

Leahs Mom, your rigged home for the new boys looks great! It seems spacious for them and with the dog house, I'm sure they're settling in nicely. They're good looking boys!

LM - those boys are lucky to have such a great chicken-mom!

OK - that's just too cute!!

And yes - I have a thing for the smush-nosed dogs! LOL! I used to breed Bostons in the early 90's and now I have a Boxer. I had and bred Olde Victorian Bulldogges in the 00's and they were the reason for "Bulldogma." This is (was) Brandy Ann. We just lost her last year. I miss the heck out of her! She was one amazing and wonderful sweetheart!

@Bulldogma I absolutely love the coloring of your Astrid and Ginger and their man. WOW! I must get some that color! Is the white base splash or am I totally off?

Have 8 SFH eggs going into lockdown on Tuesday, very excited for some diversity in my little flock. Im really hoping for girls. I currently have 4 boys and 2 girls and really want to keep 2 of the boys. These are my first shipped eggs to incubate and 8 out of 14 is pretty awesome I think (seller sent 15 but my darling middle son accidentally cracked one, and actually I paid for 10 so 8 is awesome!)

Love all the pictures everyone posts. I really love the color variety in this breed.

Pretty pullet! I'll echo what others have said - should not be a problem as long as it doesn't continue.

[/URL]Here are some more pictures of the boys and girls, with the first one being the guy I think is a snow leopard, but not sure!
Beautiful flock! Have you made it to the swap in Lawrenceburg yet? It is the largest in the state. The last one for the year was last Saturday, but they will be starting back up in March, I believe. How far are you from Lawrenceburg? I would love to trade eggs with you if we could meet up somewhere.

They don't call me a Master Enabler for nothing!
