Okay so this isn't the best picture since I was one-handed, but see:

Second picture shows they weren't all yellow like I thought, there's some red there too.

Here's the chick that was in the ICU this weekend, looking much better (and much more like the SFH I expected, lol):

I see now that the two yellow chicks actually have a very soft red coloring on their backs and heads, so now I'm *super* interested to see how they feather out. If they're splash I won't mind, I just liked the flowered look.

My other 3 SFH never internally pipped. I think our unseasonably cold weather made it too dry in the house and they lost too much moisture. I had 5 out of 6 large Dominique eggs for a friend hatch just fine, I think because they were larger the extra moisture loss didn't effect them as much.

So this will be my last hatch for the winter, I will try again with SFH in the Spring unless I end up with 3 beautiful girls, haha. :)
So cute.. I ADORE those little black and yellow chicks....Here is wishing 3 girls for you! I have 6 four week olds in the grow out pen in my heated tack room and I am starting to think I have 3 cockerels! agggggg! BUT....50/50 I'll take....out of my last two attempts,,...I only got 1 female each time,, so if I have 3 girls out there.. I will be over the moon! Keep us posted!

I had one look like that, he turned out like this:

Ended up not keeping him because of his lack of flowering, but I love the color-combination. Please keep us updated on how yours turn out.
How are your chicks doing, Melabella?
Hi Alpine!!!

I owe you many apologies for not answering you the other time you inquired. BYC on my ancient computer in the kitchen where I type just gets too jammed with that sticky key garbage, and it is SO frustrating to type. I also get super frustrated trying to type on my phone with all the little keys....and my old eyes! (I am turning into my mother...not a bad thing... but nonetheless, I'm getting quirky!). SO..... the sticky delay isn't happening at the moment, and I will try to madly type away before it hits.... Does this happen to anyone else or is it just my computer????

OK.. the 6 four week olds just bumped up to the next size grow out pen I have as the they are getting far to big for the little brooder. I still haven't put them out with in the big grow out stall as it has been getting into the teens at night.. and I don't think the Brinsea is made for below freezing temps. I have a heated tack room in my barn which is set to 65 degrees,, so they will spend another 2/3 weeks in there depending upon how they feather out. I haven't seen as obvious male presentation as I did with my other cockerels with this group. Two for sure.. with a third suspected. If the remaining three are cockerels.. they are the slow comb growing kind. I am going to post pictures hopefully from my phone when I go out this morning, I am going to get my daughter to help me as they move so fast now.. I can't manage by myself. I am quite excited that the one black chick who I thought was a male for sure... just might be a female...as her comb really hasn't changed at all and more so her personality is quite shy and submissive, but... what do I know!!!! The infamous racing stripe chick may also be another girl.. and a third mille fluer seems female as well. Everyone here can let me know what they think. Flowering on this group is very slow as well.. with three of them seeming to be plain brown wrappers so far... but we all know that can change at any moment with these guys!

How about your little grow outs?

Is it just me or is that black boy to die for ! I love him.. soo sooo pretty! Seems he should get a stay of execution to the soup pot so to see how he matures a little bit more. I have never seen a picture of a boy that black. I love his mahogany additions with keeping mostly black and seems to be flowering lovely. I'd hold onto him a bit longer, no?

Thanks, Melabella, and no, he's not getting thrown into the pot too soon! He may have another home in the works. I would love to keep him but I already have 3 Dominique roosters who think they're lap dogs (one gets irritated if we try to put him back down once he's in our arms) and so, while I plan to expand the Swedish department of our little farm, it's going to have to wait for now because we just don't need any more roosters (and those poor hens certainly don't need any more, either!).

This I understand completely! There was someone looking for a black based roo on the FB pages so if his home falls through there is someone looking! I too will have more than a few cockerels that I need to find homes for. I just don't have the room for them..and now that the little ones are growing up... The two big boys are starting to beat up on them a bit. I have all ready sold two.. but have 3 more... with another 3 in the brooder growing out! yikes!

That is hysterical about the Dominque getting upset when you try to put him down... these birds are too much!

I have two Swedish Flower hens( the two laying down in the back). They are about 7 weeks old. When will I be able to tell if they are pullets or cockerels? So far not much growth in the combs or any color at all. I do not see waddles either.. I know I need some better pictures but they were not cooperating tonight. The brown speckled one is super sweet and calm the black and white one does not like to be messed with and run like I am going to kill her.
