I finally had time to get some baby pictures from the last few hatches

The one with the egg shell on her bum was the first to hatch at about 3am yesterday. She had to wait all day for the rest to hatch so I could open the hatcher and remove the shell.

Cute!!! The egg-on-the-bum worked for her!! She's adorable! What do you use to band the youngsters? Those almost look like what we use to band surgery instruments to ID what packs they go in.

Those are Narrow E-Z Clip Bands from Foy's Pigeon Supplies. I start with the E-Z Elastic Bands for the first week or 2 and then switch to the narrow bands and finally to the E-Z Clip bands that are numbered.

Thanks! Will go take a look. I need something to ID the chicks, pretty soon I won't be able to remember them all individually!

@Chica Chick
I may have been the person who mentioned that they do roam far when they free range. We live in the country and have about 3 cleared acres of lawn. Our closest neighbors are about a football field away. We have a few breeds, but the other breeds stay within a pretty close radius of our house. Last year we lost 4 of our 6 SFHs because they left the flock to go off by themselves and wandered almost into the neighbor's yard. There they were greeted by the neighbor's two dogs. They are wonderful, though, and perhaps this was a unique experience. Every situation is different, so don't be discouraged from getting them!

I have eggs hatching! 5 out so far, at least 3 of them are SFH. I think I also have one cochin, and one cochin cream mix. I'm lucky my kids are actually getting dressed for school, they're in here every five minutes checking on the babies. Three more days before we open the incubator.

Sounds like you have a good start then. Maybe @ki4got will weigh in on your chances of getting any blues out of what you have now.

crested black boy over black and blue uncrested girls, the blue girls will throw 50% blue/black, the crested boy will throw 50% crested. nice ratio IMO.

I lost both of my crested girls over the winter but still have my crested boy from the same breeding. currently tho my Blue is in with all the remaining girls (7). i'll be cycling in crested blue mille and later uncrested black mille from Leigh (when he's a bit older).

to the person deciding which cockerel to keep, IMO keep both. if you only have one, something will happen that you'll need the second in command... whenever I've had only 1 boy, I've lost him. thus, I'm now selling my red and buff bantam cochins, since I lost both boys during the last 3 weeks.

One of the hatched SFH chicks died, I'm not really sure why. Everyone else if fine in there. 6 hatched and 3 more pips. One of the SFH is like orange redish. Very cute.
