How is she doing?

Sofie is doing well, thanks! She's hunkered down in her makeshift broody pen, which is under the platform where the roosts and regular nest boxes are located. She hasn't come out since the 5-10 minutes on the first day. I put food and water right next to her, and there's room in her pen to scratch and dust bathe if she so chooses. I've hand fed her some scrambled eggs a couple of times, which she gobbles up quickly. She's sitting on 7 hopefully fertile eggs. If they hatch, it's be very interesting to see all the different SF crosses! Rooster is SF; eggs she's sitting on are SFH, Lavender Amer, Mille Fleur EO (Basque), SF, and bearded EE

The other day, I left the barrier to her pen open a crack, in case she wanted to go out and stretch, poop, or whatever. Instead, my BA decided that the broody nest box (a repurposed 5 gallon bucket) might be a new excellent laying site. Sofie was not happy, to say the least, but she has an overall great personality, so she tolerated the intrusion. She sat on the BA egg after it was laid, but I removed it because I know it won't be fertile (Roo gets the dickens kicked out of him by the BA and BR if he even tidbits at them).
The pen access is now closed to prevent further intrusions.

I check up on her, but pretty much leave her alone so she and Mother Nature can do their thing.

I'm curious, but what would the chicks look like if you bred a SFH and a Speckled Sussex? Or and other mottled breed?

Would they look like SFH?

yes, they would probably look very similar. the ss has mahogany tho, so those chicks might be a much darker red unless your sfh carry mahogany as well.

@Melabella

Wow! Nero's chest is getting so big - what a beauty! I see the poor thing had as rough a winter as ours did on those combs, though. Thank goodness we're out of February!
