Swedish Flower Hen Thread

most of us have our location under our avatar...  and you may not always get a quick response, but never fear we will see your questions eventually. I'm only on here maybe 1x per day, sometimes not even that.

Before I realized that I may have two roosters, I seen some sfh chicks on craigslist. Now, that I want another?...Nothing, nada, nil, zip!! I really wanted a pair so I could gradually replenish my flock on my own. I don't to cross breed my sfh with my others. I love my crested one. I'm a stay at home mom and so gardening and my chickens are my relief! :)

I'm a stay at home mom too. I get the same relief from my chickens and gardening. It's like therapy or something.

I love this breed of course these are my first chicks. What started out as a completely yellow chick is looking absolutely gorgeous

Very pretty.

Good news here: Candled my German import sfh eggs today that I had gotten by mail, Day 9. Out of 22 only one had a detached aircell and didn´t develop. 3 more were early quitters. 18 still going strong, could even see very active movement in many of them!
And I´m starting to win the rat battle. Haven´t had any signs in awhile, and it smells awful in the coop- must be a few of the nasty creatures inside the walls, rotting away and never going to harm another chicken ever again.

Does anyone have a picture of a grown sfh rooster that was a black and white chick?

Sorry, I only have a cockerel, because I generally don´t keep the black ones, I like the other varieties better:

I was gone from home all day and night yesterday. I was really worried because I knew that my splash girl was due to hatch, and the last girl lost all her babies to rats in that coop. So I was pretty nervous opening the door to the coop this morning, thinking I would find an empty nest and no chicks, but I came home to this:

She hatched 9 for 9! No unhatched eggs, no dead chicks. I hadn´t even candled them, either. Didn´t want to risk losing more babies, though, so I locked her and her chicks in an old rabbit hut with a small run, all with wire mesh to keep predators out. Here are the babies ready for the move (the eggs I had gathered before out of the other coop):

Looks like she has lots of splash babies! This is so good to see after losing the last hatch! I hope they do OK. The rabbit hut can open out into the big run, so I´ll probably let them out with the others in a few days.

So thrilled for you, Alpine Chicken! They're so beautiful! I hate you had the horrible rat fiasco, but it looks like you ended up with a wonderful hatch in the end. Mama is lovely, too - love those splash!
