Most of mine stay in their pen but I have one gal that is a rebel breaks out all the time she's smart that's the truth, as far as flying not so much in my experience.

Hi guys. I'm seriously considering this breed as my first chicken purchase as straight run chicks or eggs, whichever works out the easiest. I know they're great at foraging for themselves, docile, and beautiful. Are they known to be flyers? Jail break chickens.

They can definitely fly. They also like to roost up high if they get a chance. Lovely, friendly breed that is a lot of fun to raise because they change daily as they grow out and no two are alike!

And they might just go broody for you! Mine that have hatched chicks have been good mothers. She is sitting on 12 eggs.

I'm good with broody. Whatever breed I pick I want them to raise some chicks. These guys seem like nice, beautiful birds.

Follow up question: is there a fence height that would contain them? I know there is always that rogue chicken who will figure out a way. But excluding that - fencing over the top of pen required? It's a large run space.

Clip there wings would be the best option

If you're able to put a topper on your run that would also protect against aerial predators.

With how flighty mine are they make good free range birds so if Thats an option for you I would definently look into it

I have poultry netting over mine and it works great. The area is 25 X 50.

Over the smaller pens, we used 6' chicken wire. If your area is larger than 6' but you have a good stable fence, you can use it in 6' strips vertically across and use hog rings to connect the strips.
