Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I would guess male since you said it is only 6-8 weeks old. Leg color can be yellow, mottled, flesh color or even white. Since it is a landrace, there are a bunch of acceptable leg colors. I think most would agree yellow are most desirable and white least, but there is no SOP, so personal preference plays a large role. You have a cute chick.

I am second guessing this little cockerel. He doesn't look like a SFH. His leg color looks very dark and his feather patterns and coloring don't look like the flowers that I've seen and raised.

I have some flowers that hatched which have darker colors than my others and no flowers as you mention... Thing is, if they don't have enough flowers, I don't breed them. :old However some people just breed them without regard to standards. :hmm

To me that one posted was female so far, in comparison to my own broods at that age. :pop

Well I ended up with just one live chick from 6 eggs, my first time broody seems to have squished a second chick while hatching, one egg was empty and the others gave up at various stages.

Meet "six" (from the egg labelled 6)

Now all I have to do is have another go to get some more!

So cute! :love

My most recent broody was having to defend her nest as 2 other girls were trying to lay in it the other day. Well she they were BOTH standing on one of the chicks while it screamed! :barnie I'm glad I was in there... because this broody was already under suspicion because of pecking one of her chicks the previous day. So had something happened I would have thought she was the killer and confiscated the chicks as well as not having nice thoughts about her... But instead I was out there and saw her grab another girls comb and vigorously shake to defend her chicks. :yesss: And I helped her get off that chick before it was too late. (Mine were already a week old and recently adopted.)

It's easy to see how quickly things can happen, sorry for the ones who didn't make it.
Six is beautiful! :wee

Can someone please help me with the genders of my two 9 week old SFHs? The lighter colored one, Maverick, is my favorite out of my 13 chicks (of 6 different breeds). It was the most bold, first to start jumping to the lip of the brooder, first to run over for treats, etc. Neither have the more erect tails of the other hens, but in looking at photos it doesn't seem like SFH hens really have the straight tails like other breeds. This is my first time with SFH and I would be so sad if they both turned out to be boys. Thanks!

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

I agree, they both appear to be pullets at this point. I have had late bloomers around 10 weeks..

Also, beautiful! :love

Oh that's so awesome, thanks so much! Poor Maverick won't have to live in a rooster collar forever! I got so lucky, out of 6 straight run chicks I only got 1 roo (see my post on the Isbar thread if you want to see him, or give your input).

View attachment 1030655 View attachment 1030656 View attachment 1030657 I've got this crested Swedish flower chick today. Not sure on exact age but probably between 6-8 weeks old. Can anyone help me sex her/him?
That doesn't look like a pure SFH. Where did you get the chick? Is it possible it may be a cross? For anyone new to this breed I would highly recommend reading this thread from start to finish. It will take a long time but if you truly want to learn everything you can, it is invaluable.
