Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Medicated feed, Sulmet, anything anti-cocci can cause thiamine deficiency. That might include vaccines, but I am not experienced with that.
This isn't breed-specific.

Hi Icatty, I agree it's a good idea!! I did it with the last two batches of chicks. How long do you put it in their water? I did it for about 4 weeks. I didn't do it with the chicks I let my broody hatch out and so far so good...but, I think it matters for those that need it. Thanks for the great observation and sharing your experiences. There's a lot to learn about these birds.
On another note....I purchased some chicks from a someone who claims they are pure SFH's. I do believe that THEY believe that to be true...however, I believe they're not. Mistakes happen, eggs and chicks get mixed up, hens get loose from their pens (maybe the kids let them out and didn't tell mom or dad)...whatever the reason. If in doubt don't pass them off!!!! I have bought different breeds of birds from 4 different BYC'ers this hatching season and ALL 4 ended up NOT being what they were supposed to be. Even with the assurance of "I KNOW..." from the seller. Fortunately, 3 sellers were gracious about it...the 4th still not admitting it despite the pictures I sent. None of the above persons post on this thread, just letting you know so nobody feels uncomfortable about commenting.
I'm only keeping SFH roosters and my little bantam NN....I would think I'd be able to tell if he sired the hatch. LOL....anyhow, just wanted to people to be aware and careful when picking birds to add to their pure flocks of SFH's.
Hi Knock Kneed Hen! I am keeping it in the water until they are at least six months old. I just couldn't stand another like Sandy. I liked her so much and am kicking myself now for my ignorance.

Anyway, I will have eggs for sale soon if anyone wants. No mix ups with me because Danilo my crested roo is in a pen with four Swedish girls and two Black Copper Marans. No way I'd mix up Maran eggs with the Swedes! My only problem is I don't know how to deal with packaging yet, or how to go about appropriate advertising, or really what I should charge. I'll figure it out soon enough. I will post photos of Danilo and the girls soon, so people know what they are getting.

lcatty -

I've had a horrible time packing shipped eggs (even though others on here are really great at it and list lots of nice how-to articles.) Seems no matter what I try (and I've tried all kinds of stuff) something always ends up broken!

Anyway, I was looking into this foam stuff . . . . don't know if anyone else has tried it? It looks a lot easier and faster than wrapping each egg with strips of bubble wrap, which is how most people do it. It does cost something, but I bet you could feature the foam as a "bonus" with your hatching eggs for sale . . . after all, it would be re-useable and would probably encourage bidders to try your professionally packaged eggs.

I've never tried the shipping foam. I have ordered chick-shipping boxes from these folks, however, and I was very satisfied.

Something to consider, maybe?

Out of 11 eggs, I had 10 SFH chicks hatch. I'm so excited! Anybody want to buy SFH chicks? LOL!

One of them has spraddle legs, but I used a little strip of vet wrap to hold them together for 24 hours. I took off the vet wrap this evening, and it seems to be getting around pretty well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that his/her legs will get stronger and straighten out. I love the variety and beauty of SFHs.

Carolj,
I am so happy for you. I am also glad someone this side of the Mississippi river has these kinds of chicks. This winter I am already tight at the seams but next Spring let me know. I live in Franklin Nc. Yeah!!! gloria Jean

You have a pretty splash boy there! He will probably get more color as he gets his adult feathering. Look at the pictures of Astolf in my SFH album on my profile page.

Whoops, I guess the pictures of him as a youngster are in my Uploads album. Anyway, here are a couple of pics of him (his name was Astrid until we found out she was a he. The old wishful-naming principle

)

And him in May at 7 months (it doesn't show in this pic, but his hackle feathers are now a very pale gold color.

I have used the shipping foam it worked pretty well. Usually I wrap each egg in bubble wrap then put it in a small priority box filled with sheaves paper lines with bubble wrap. Then I place that box inside a large priority box with more paper and bubble wrap.
