Swedish Flower Hen Thread

for those that are really interested, this is the "swedish country club" that actually manages the gene bank for swedish flower hens http://www.kackel.se/lantras_hons.html

here is what they say about the breed:

"Skånsk blommehöna
From the Sydskånska plain will this our largest native breed hen. In the villages Vomb, Tofta and Esarp found farm flocks that make up today's blommehöns. Chickens breed has been named after older people in Skåne who spoke of them as "di old flower mede."
Characteristics

Body shape is round and robust. Spring color has been the character of the white feather tips of different colored background. The primer can be black, blue (gray), wild-colored (red-orange roosters and hens brown) or light yellowish. like most other breeds of chickens have blommehöns a simple and serrated ridge. Some animals may tassel (spring bush) on the head. Weight 2 to 2.5 hen, rooster 2.5-3.5 kg. " (translated using google)

What I have read in their forums about leg color for example, is that it seems that it is not uncommon that they have yellow legs, but it is also not a "standard"...
they seem to be pretty much against strict detailed breed standards. They are using the "genbank" SFHs to "breed" and just weed out certain smaller "cosmetic defects" as well as unhealthy chickens.
I think it is important to focus more on health and smaller cosmetic defects (like irregular combs with side springs, split combs, crooked legs, deformed beaks, split wings, etc. etc.) than to focus on anything specific, especially the coloring of this chicken "breed" one cannot really standardize, as it comes in such a huge variety.

It is important to know that ones chickens are out of the gene pool, basically for us in the states a chicken who can be traced back to greenfire or any other person that imported them directly from Sweden.

"It is a landrace and should not become a show or commercial breed" (basically what the swedish are saying!).

There is a lot to read, use your browser in "translate" mode, and read through, there is tons of material, especially in the country club forum, etc.!!

if anyone's looking, BHep posted on the crazy-24hr-auction some sfh eggs for sale... I can honestly say she packs her eggs well, and we had a decent hatch rate. out of 5 eggs 4 developed and hatched, but we lost one within a day. the other 3 are still kicking with their adoptive parents. (i got a large assortment of other breeds sent as well as the SFH).

We had a bunch of swf hens born about 13 days ago. The last one to be born had splayed legs and was small. My wife Sharon did everythuing she could, searching the internet, worrying, and finally gave up, putting the swf chick back in the newborn box to pass away. Chickens must have a sense that some people will try to help them but they have their own way of knowing their own problems. BOOM the baby female is getting up, her crinkled foot has straightened out, and she is walking better and better. I honestly think and hope she will be able to breed some day.

Paul -
As soon as you can, get to a grocery store or pharmacy and pick up some PolyVisol - these are vitamin drops for (human) infants. Get the stuff without iron. Generic should be OK too. Give the chick a tiny drop and then put some in the water each day. It worked wonders for my chick who had issues!! I learned about that here - others have also had great success!

Best of luck and keep us posted!!

This is Bronze, about 6 weeks old.

My resident chicken farmer son, lol.
Your little chicken wrangler looks so cute. Chickens are really great animals for kids
to grow up with. The SFH's are perfect for kids because of their outgoing personalities. I love the tender moments I catch when I
see my boys sweet talking to a chicken.

Pictures of Little Mom

Little Moms feet today

Going to get something to eat

You can see how she is holding her right leg sometimes

'
Drinking water full weight on the right leg Note no curled toes period

I am Paul's wife and he is partly right about the chick. Her name is Little Momma.... Little Mom for short.

I tried to hobble her and nothing I tried worked for me. I didn't put her in the brooder to pass away tho.

I exercised her legs and made sure she ate and drank and prayed alot.

I gave the chicks peiodlite for babys like I was told to do for the first week Then I started them on the PolyVisol without iron this past tuesday and no medicated food

I gave her drops of the vit everyday from day 1 also. And I prayed alot cause of my lack of being able to hobble her correctly nothing I tried seem to work for me.

She is doing great right now so far. She is up and down and walking around Does sit somewhat but if you had her spayed legs befor they got to where they are now you would too... even her right foot was curled up bad and its now straighten out like the other one. She favors that leg and does have the sense to get off it but when she is up and moving around she lets everyone know it with her vocal coards Its like " I am coming through get out of the way! " You can hear her in the other room with 2 doors closed and when you go to ck on the chicks its her up and moving and her mouth is going a mile a minute.

I credit a strong will to live the Vitamines and God's hand in her leg problem. She was the last egg to hatch out and had a hard time of it. Took longer to get out of egg than the other 9 did.

I wish I had taken pictures of her legs when they were so messed up however I don't but I do have pictures of her I just took to show how well she is doing tonight. They were born on the 9th of Sept so she is now 12 days old.

Sorry the pictures have a red tint to them its the heat lamp.
