Swedish Flower Hen Thread

if anyone's looking, BHep posted on the crazy-24hr-auction some sfh eggs for sale... I can honestly say she packs her eggs well, and we had a decent hatch rate. out of 5 eggs 4 developed and hatched, but we lost one within a day. the other 3 are still kicking with their adoptive parents. (i got a large assortment of other breeds sent as well as the SFH).
That is good to know, cause them eggs is on the way to Micanopy and will be here Monday and in the bator they go.
For those of you that might remember the SFH pullet that had one of her legs pulled off, the one I called Peg-ee. She was doing great and I was going to put her back in the coop with her sisters in a couple more days. Well had a sever thunderstorm come thru after dark one night and the next morning when I went out to feed up I had 3 dead chicks, 3 dead quail and Peg-ee was also dead. All my cages that I keep my quail and growing and convalescing birds in are under cover and off the ground. One of them things that happen I reckon. Was a lot of lighting and thunder and heavy rain for about 1 hour.
The other 3 pullets are doing great and should lay any day. I still don't have a replacement rooster yet, BUTT figure to wait until first of year to find one. The girls should be laying nice size, for a SFH by then.

LazyQ, Wow, you just keep getting hit!! Sorry for your losses, especially Peg-ee. I was mesmerized by her story. The will to survive is amazing, both in people and animals.

Texas Chickens, so glad that your little one is doing better. I give vitamins to all my chicks now. I believe it CAN make a difference, and sounds like it did in Little Mom's case.

Things may be looking up. I got a young Maremma/ Great Pyrenees boy a month or 2 ago. He will be 6 mos old Monday. I put him in the pasture with the coops and a couple Guineas a hen and a couple roosters that been free ranging. Up until last night there has been a coon coming and pulling the wide rabbit feeder off the SFH coop wall and eating the pellets. This morning it was still there so maybe Mike did his job or perhaps the coon didn't come round last night. Besides the one Blue EE hen that is free ranging I have 7 hens in a coop with a Big White EE roo. None seem to be laying though. BUTT other people I have talked to say their hens ain't laying either.
I ain't give up yet. I am like a steer, all I can do is keep trying.

Little Momma and I take 1 day at a time around here. So far so good this morning with her.

The vitamins I believe in fully now. All the little ones get them till from what I was reading they are 6 months old...am using Purina Flock stater on them all instead of chick starter as all the bags I got of that were smashed it seems more powder than little bits to eat and I threw too much away but the PFS is not like that. Also alot of feedstores around here do not carry the unmedicated chick starter. Am also going to continue what Glenda told me when the SFHens eggs we got from her to do when they hatch out... use the electorlite stuff for babies for a week instead of water. Then the vitamins in the water.

I read something about using B complex liquid for leg problems but can't seem to find the website now... I wonder if you can use it inconjuction with the vitamin's

Ya'll have a good there there

Translated from Swedish: "Legs and beak are skin-colored, yellow or black mottled. The crest is simple and serrated."
Because these birds are pure-bred mixed mutts - LOL - I think that quite a bit of variety is acceptable. Aside from the colors, the body conformation does *seem* fairly consistent. It would make sense that most SFH will mature to have yellowish eyes.

Mutt genetics = too cool!
YES GOT TO LOVE MUTT GENETICS.

I'll have to read updates later. fixing to go to my brothers wedding. But I did just hear from the seller of my damaged eggs is going to replace them!! YAY! Then no more hatching till spring!
