Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Another one hatched at about 5:30 this morning. 1 is pipped. 6 still waiting on. Wow, Those 2 were a surprise! I didn't expect anything till at least this evening!

not SFH, but i'm also hatching chicks today, due tomorrow. Mille Fleur bantam cochins tho for me.

6 cochins and 1 dorking went into lockdown, due the 18th, but lately they're showing up 12+ hours early... but they seem to be totally healthy and my hatch rates are outstanding, so i'm not adjusting anything. except to add more eggs to the incubator. next group will be out of 41 more cochin eggs (shipped) due the 24th and then 6 more cochin and 12 assorted LF (dorking/blrw) due november 3.

no laying SFH nearby, unless someone wants to send me some eggs to 'test' 8)

Congratulations Kimbroe and ki4got on your hatching chicks!

ki4got - I have a feeling you'll be hatching plenty of SFH starting this coming Spring :) Our nest boxes went in yesterday. I'm thinking the earliest we will see any eggs would be the week before Christmas... but that's only if my SFH decide winter laying is their thing - LOL.

Who has experience with SFH laying in the winter? Do they or do the young pullets wait until the days get longer to start?

VickiW - I, too live in N. Wisc and my SFH's are doing pretty good with egg production. I only have the two but get 5 eggs per week from each of my girls. I can actually tell the eggs apart. Pewter's are a darker brown than Helga's. They started laying at 20 weeks, which was early July and are still laying well. We started lighting the coop for total of 14 hours of daylight about a month ago which I've found to help with winter egg laying in any breed. That's Pewter in the foreground with Helga, the crested hen behind her. I need to get some better photos. I love this breed - they are beautiful, curious and people friendly.

Vicki W - forgot to mentio -n I have a second batch of SFH's 9 weeks old and 4 out of 5 are roosters. I'd be happy to rehome them for free if you know anyone who might be interested in them, take one or take all.

I have been lurking for quite awhile looking at these beautiful hens and roos. I love the spotted ones in the black and the red. Who is best to order from on the East coast of Us if possible???
That hen is gorgeous.!!! Gloria Jean

Grimla, Beautiful chicken. Within the last few months, having discovered these birds on the internet, I fell in love and despair. The bright coloring ( can't wait until there big enough to let out of a cage ) different shapes, and almost a daily change in coloring, causes an excitement that comes back every day I look at them. At my age that is very important. I have bought quite a few eggs off the internet and am having a bad experience hatching them. Twenty in the big incubator are about to expire. I don't have tears but part of me is in there. Can't wait until they are big and running free in the fields. My chickens run fairly free but, return home every night. They aew so pretty. Paul
