Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I agree, Polyvisol without iron pulled through an AM for me. I also use it if a hen has acted droppy after being broody. It helps them to catch up. Sorry you lost your pretty little baby. Gloria jean

Yup, I have vitamins in the water. This chick was just a little bit smaller, slower and less interested in food than the others. (S)He did drink plenty but also spent more time sleeping than the others. Every once in awhile you just get one like that. Still sad when it happens.

I'm so sorry. I can relate at this very moment. I have one that is going right now. I put it in a cup with a paper towel, to let it have privacy and not get trampled on by the others. This one is a Silver Sussex that I hatched after my SFH hatch. It's always so sad.

Got some pictures this morning, one week old today, wing growth.
This one is the dark one. I believer it will not be crested.
I started saving my SFH eggs yesterday for the incubator. I have 4 eggs from the three so far. I have 18 empty spots in my Hovabator.
I have 66 assorted chicken eggs in the bators. Also rotating 10 quail eggs in one rack. I had 7 of 10 hatch this morning and have 20 others going. 10 of them go in lock down Thursday. I am almost out of quail. They sure good eating.
n When my Guardian dog got killed, wild critters came in and abou wipet out my free range chickens. I have another Guardian dog in the pasture, so gonna try to build my stock back up.
My SFH will stay cooped.

Looks crested to me

Lucky! You have a crested! Cute babies. A couple of mine are older. Maybe I should get some pictures. I think one is going to be that pretty blue.

Oh, and I hope your new guardian dog is tougher than the last! Good luck on building that flock up.
You are hatching like crazy like I was, I am now selling my bators, after three years of hatching. Well, keeping one still air for back up in case a broody mom doesn't work out. Plus, I might do a few in it this come spring. This is going to be so strange, not looking forward to eggs in the mail, or hatching them. I am just finishing up my last hatch today..they are Cinnamon Sussex. I have 5 out, and working on it, out of 10 that went into lock down. Thinking that's what I am going to end up with...6.

At a week old it's already a bit late for an accurate wing sex. In the first 3 days they're growing their very first wing feathers and that is what I have used as a gauge in the past. After the 5th day, the amount of wing feather growth masks what that very first growth was showing. Also, be sure to spread out the primary feathers (on the very tip of the wing) to get a good looksee. Those tend to be the most telltale in those first few days.

I'm sorry I can't be much more of a help. I can still see *some* differences in these shots - still betting that dark one is a cockerel and the blonde will be your very own Barbie doll! (Maybe with BIG hair!)
