Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Well they mystery of the odd looking SFHs has been solved. The breeder had an Americana hen in with the SFH. She said she would send me replacement eggs in the spring.
Hi I got a better photo of my supposed SFH chick with a weird comb (maybe pea comb because it looks like three rows of comb). Does anyone have SFH with pea comb?

He also doesn't have any tail feathers like the rest of the SFH

Great news that the breeder will replace the eggs! Funny - you would think the Americana egg would have been a different color from the others.

Is there any one on this page that can help me out...This is my senior year in high school and 4H...I just saw this bird and am new o this page...I I saw pictures of these birds and saw how rare they are and fell in love with this breed....I am in need of 6 chicks with at least 4 hens and 2 roosters for show and a project that I have to show the younger kids in our club....I would even take hatching eggs to be able to study the whole process....I don't have alot of money but would really like to do these birds as my final 4H project, I think it would be really exciting to have such a rare and beautiful bird...I just want you to know if someone can help me out by selling these to me at a lower price I would be greatful and would keep you posted during my projects entirity...I also would not sell hatching eggs I would give them to people to hatch or I would hatch them and give them away to give this amazing breed help....Please help me!! pm me. Thank you in advanced..I know there is someone out there that can help me out....

Justin - welcome aboard! Wish I had eggs, but my girls are not yet laying. I think very highly of 4H and I'd send you some in a heart beat if I had any. I'm keeping my fingers crossed someone else on here will help you out. Otherwise, I'll send you some this spring if I can! I take it you have access to a good incubator??

Welcome, Justin!

I don't have eggs yet either.

So I was outside yesterday and I've been wondering this for awhile, but I think he's big enough now to definitely tell. I think my dark boy 2 face has split wing - its only in 1 of his wings tho. Is this something that is frowned upon with this breed or since it's a landrace breed it's not that big a deal. I've never dealt with split wing, but I know in other breeds it's a big no-no.

I still haven't gotten new pics up, sorry. Crazy busy time of year. Thanksgiving, my son's bday, my brother's bday and oh, can't forget Christmas shopping! I know my girls (boys too) are missing me since I haven't been out there much since Turkey day. Every time I go outside they rush me!

Wulfandwyn, This is what I worry about. People mixing their birds and they're not even aware of it. Not everyone is on BYC or FB and wouldn't have any reason to question if their bird was pure SFH or not. Most people take the word of the breeder. At least the seller in your case acknowledged it and is making it right. I'd question the one with the bright buff color as well. If in doubt, I wouldn't breed it.

Funny, I bought a splash Ameraucana because I wanted blue eggs...nothing that could be confused with a SFH egg. As it feathered out, it's mottling became solid black. It started laying....a light beige egg :( My son loves the bird. She's very sweet. If I don't have the trailer coop up by spring she'll have to find a new home. So Bulldogma, what the seller probably has are Easter Eggers and not Ameraucanas.

jbarrett, what part of the country are you in? Shipped eggs don't do too great. There may be someone near you that you can pick up from. My only laying SFH is in isolation, being treated for a heavy load of tapeworms. Out of 35 birds I got one egg yesterday, and it was from the wormy bird. :p

Kimbroe 1981, I'll try to take pictures tomorrow of the pullets I have with the worst split wing I've seen yet. I'd wait until your birds are fully grown before determining this. You don't want to make decisions during molting season either. This is my view on the matter: If you're just starting a breeding program, why start with a known defect? I've read that it's extremely difficult to breed out of them. One would think that in a natural free ranging flock a split winged bird wouldn't have the advantage of flying up high to get away from ground predators. I don't know...just thinking out loud.
