Sweeter Heater and ambient temp & light for brooding chicks?

Hi, all,

Rank newbie here so please don't laugh too hard at my stupid questions. ;) I have ten chicks arriving next week and am trying to decide where to set up the brooder. I'd originally planned to use my garage since it's usually brighter and a little warmer than the basement. But then it got down to 40 outside last night, which made me wonder: if my heater is working correctly, do I need to worry about ambient air temp and light? I have a small (11" x 11") Sweeter Heater instead of a red heat bulb. Is that big enough for ten chicks? What do people who have them hang them from? Really want to get it going soon so the smell I've read about will burn off in time. Thanks!
