Last night I got home way after dark from an out of town high school soccer game that my granddaughter was playing in. Yesterday was a cold and windy day here in the mountains of Western North Carolina!
I left my coop door open in the run so my 2 hens and rooster could go inside their coop at dusk like they usually do. Well, the wind blew their coop door closed while I was gone and when I pulled into my driveway last night my headlights beamed on a pile of chickens laying alongside their coop door. Oh no! I thought the worse!
I ran over to them and when I got closer I saw my rooster was laying on top of both chickens with his wings out and he was protecting them from the wind and darkness. As soon as I opened their door, they were scared to death but all ran inside the safe coop. That had to be one of the sweetest things I've ever seen a rooster do to protect his girls.
