Something bad happened, then something good happened. The bad was that a preditor got my wonderful silky momma hen. The chicks were fine but she was just plain gone. I worried about the little ones since they were only two weeks old so I put them in a pen with my three baby turkeys and my one silly hen, Sweetums. Okay, when I say that she is silly it is becuase Sweetums was my useless hen. I bought her becuase she was so pretty, all silky black, nice crest, size, all that a black silky should be. The problem is that Sweetums, as sweet as she is, doesn't lay, doesn't set, doesn't do any of the things that Silkies are great at...except she is very pretty. SO...I had her with the baby turkeys to help settle them down. The turkeys were very wild when I brought them home and Sweetums example helped them figure out how to eat and drink and all those important things. Anyway, now the baby chicks are in with her too. Two days after I put them in I was surprised to see that not only had the baby silkies forced old Sweetums to be thier adopted mommy, but the baby turkeys have done the same! It is hysterical to see three tiny silky chicks and three great big turkey poults all trying to crowd under her in the evening! My Sweetums has found a purpose in life! She's not just a pretty face anymore!

I'm sorry for your loss, but it sounds like Sweetums has found her calling in life! I can only imagine how crowded it gets under "mum". You'll have to get a picture for us!
