I have had ducks and chickens over the years and pretty much just let things go as they please. One time I had a duck setting on eggs on the floor of the building. I noticed a chicken laid an egg in the duck nest. I didn't want to incubate the one egg so I left it in the duck nest. The chicken hatched a few days before the duck eggs, so I left the baby chicken with the duck until the duck eggs hatched.

Well, they did and when I went out, I couldn't find the duck, the babies or the baby chicken. I ran out to the pond and I saw momma duck, baby ducks behind her and the baby chicken following. Every one knows chickens can't swim, right? I spent 20 minutes chasing the momma duck with the babies and that chicken before I got it out of the water. The baby chicken could swim as fast as the baby ducks. I was told that by leaving the baby chicken for several days, it was on and under and all around the momma duck which got the duck oil on its feathers and that is why the baby chicken didn't drown. After the chicken grew up, it stayed with the ducks and was always near the pond bank. I didn't even think of my video camera. I could have won $10,000.00.

That is some story! I know that chickens can't swim, but you mentioning about the oils in the chicken feathers, who am I to say about that?? Interesting. Sure do wish you had video taped it, it would be fun to watch.

There was a post on here last summer with pictures someone posted of their kids in the pool with their chickens. Chickens can swim. They looked like they were having a great time - kids and chickens.
