SWINE FLU PANDEMIC? Mx, NY, TX, KS...

Translated from another forum:

I am a medical specialist in respiratory infirmities and in intensive therapy. Presently in the National Institutes of Health we are living a very severe emergency due to the reality of the flu infection. Every time more patients are admitted in the Intensive Care Unit, nevertheless, in spite of the heroic efforts of all the personnel (doctors, nurses, specialists, etc.) The patients keep dying with nothing to be done about it. The truth is that the anti-viral treatments are not having the hoped-for effect in spite of elevated doses. There is a great fear among the personnel, the possibility of contagion is very high given the strong virulence of the virus. Chaos is starting to rein in the “units of attention” of the hospitals “Manuel Gea Gonzalez”, INCAN, INER, INP, etc., and we don’t know what to do. Personnel are starting to “absent” themselves and many are opting for retirement or are requesting vacation. The truth is that the mortality every time is higher. At least in the hospital where I work 3 to 4 patients die daily from this epidemic, and we were already noticing it from more than three weeks ago. So the mortality is much higher than that reported by the authorities who try to hide the true information. To us they have told us that we are not to talk to reporters, that we will be sanctioned if we talk to someone from the press. In the same way they recommend to not put in the death certificates the basic cause of death (INFECTION OF INFLUENZA), it is said that we should note pneumonia, insufficient respiration, or sepsis and not the real cause to hide the exact number of deaths. It is a terrible thing and very scary what we are actually living right now, and we don’t know what to do. Every time more patients younger than 20 or 30 years old are dying before our impotence and treatment as health personnel.

This is what I don't understand... If you get sick and you think it's this then you need to get to the Dr.s to get the flu meds within 2 days of getting sick (per the cdc), yet in the same breath everyone is saying stay home...
Well how can you stay home and get yourself to the Dr.s to get the treatment. Seems like I can see someone dying from staying home because that's what they were told to do

Sure you're going to expose people in the waiting room who don't already have it, but you need the medicine right?

There have been two reported cases in British Columbia, which is just 30 minutes from where I live. Despite all the hype, I'm only concerned, not "panicked". There have been no deaths so far in the US. I'm not saying that people should dismiss this, just educate yourself. Stay home, call a doctor EARLY. A friend at work put off going to a doctor for her flu symptoms, and by the time she went she had a respiratory and ear infection. Swine flu symptoms are pretty much indistinguishable from normal flu symptoms.

I wish it were more normal in this country to wear face masks. I just really like the idea.

We simply have to have common sense and be more alert and attentive.

If this is a true report from Mexico, we need to be vigilant. My kids are some of the only white kids in the school... many of the children come from families who are coming and going back and forth to Mexico frequently... BUT. Just like the US. Mexico is a big place and I haven't heard of any cases in Sonora so hopefully we are still safe.

Well, yes, but they are at least checking in the airports and stopping people who have fevers per the SARS-o-meter. I realize that is not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

Couple of points:

-If you have flu-like symptoms, a doc can call in a scrip over the phone. You can pick it up at a drive-thru pharmacy, thereby creating minimal exposure both to patients in the waiting room and the pharmacy staff. Or you can send a healthy relative or friend to pick it up for you. In an emergency such as this, the doc does not absolutely have to see you--you can take your own temperature and there is not much to be gained from observing that yes, indeed, your throat is red and irritated and your nose is running. Or the doc may set up a separate flu clinic staffed by a physician's assistant or someone else in a group practice.

-"Stay home" is advice intended for the fools like my mother and my boss, who feel that they are Demonstrating Loyalty and Dedication To The Company when they come to work sneezing all over the place and making everyone else deathly ill. Newsflash: The Company doesn't care about you and will downsize you in a heartbeat if it improves their bottom line, even if you came to work while ill with bubonic plague. Don't ask me why after so many layoffs, people still need to be told this.
