SWINE FLU PANDEMIC? Mx, NY, TX, KS...

Yes, Tamiflu is great. Unfortunately, by the time I realized how sick I was getting it was too late. It has to be started within 48 hours of symptoms starting. Thankfully, my husband is military so I have good insurance if I just use it!

I am a nurse in a very busy clinic and while cold and flu season have been passing us and I try to get people to wear masks who come in coughing and blowing body fluids everywhere ..they get pissy about wearing them and wear them on thier heads...on their necks ..on their arms...suddenly because there is a freak out we can not keep our cold kit/ masks stocked!
I see everyone walking in and out with a handfuls of them! and some folks wearing them who are not even sick!

the thing that makes me annoyed is when it comes to sharing germs they already have some folks are very willing and resent the idea of wearing a mask when asked to ...now because of the whole Swine Flu thing ...folks (and they tell me this) are worried about "catching this flu" themselves they are all about those masks now!

I am kind of annoyed at this behavior because our lobby was full of sick people spreading stuff everywhere for months but not wearing those maskes....... but figure whatever it takes to keep sick people from spreading illness to others ..even if it is self motivated ..

one of my patients was all freaked out about this virus and was in a rampage about the "terrorist plot" and how if the government comes up with a vaccine then " Just because the corrupt FDA approves it I wont be taking it!!!"

as I was smiling and injecting his butt with an FDA approved drug to help him with his ailments

people can and do die of the secondary infections brought on by the flu ..period we should all be careful and considerate when it comes to spreading sickness

We have a case here in Ohio, yes they had just got back From mexico.

Now tell me we dont need to worry about all the illegal alien coming into the states, from Mexico.

Last night we found out my daughters' school district will be closed until May 11. My daughters are so bummed. They just got their track shoes and now the district has canceled the remaining events.

Also, my husband's coworker sent her daughter to hang out with a friend who has the flu and then sent her daughter to school where my kids go. It's ignorant individuals like her who are helping spread this thing.

PS I have to note here that while it may not seem we are "prepared" for this ..we actually are quite prepared and have been for a long time ...most health care institutions have a plan for a pandemic...we recieve mandatory training every year and have a supply of antiviral medications that will be given as needed to healthcare providers and patients ...

I have been in contact with friends who work in our health departments and they are relieved that things are going so quickly and smoothly with this "scare"... they had all these plans ready to go and no way of actually "testing" it until now ..so far so good to be honest at least in our state our health depts are (in spite of the cuts) are ready to act

no one will be denied care if they need it and the only changes are the un or underinsured will be in the ER's instead of their private practice doctors or clinics ..and while that will get people treated it is not great to clog up our already clogged ER's

flu outbreaks are not something people in healthcare take lightly no one wants an epidemic to cripple us! that is why I ask people to wash hands ..and wear masks!

please do not use this as an excuse to berate Mexicans who cross the boarder

that is not what this is about ..this is about how we pull together as people and get through something not blame

I am not hiding away but I am taking precautions staying away from ill people and keeping hands clean. Now it is a time will tell thing

If this panic continues to grow, I'll be locking my family in just to avoid the freak-out. The face masks are sold out all over town, because 50% of our population of 100K is between the ages of 18 and 30. It's a college town, and if this flu acts like the 1918, the immuno-response is what kills the patient- they drown in their mucus. The age group of 20-30 have the best immuno-response and it takes a toll, rather than being a good thing.

I'm personally just going on about my business until there's something nearer than Junction City- which is where the KS infections are...coincidentally the epicenter for the first infections of 1918.

It's nearly comical to watch the press respond to this, though. They had a long story regarding how they're not to call it the swine flu, then proceeded to talk about the swine flu for 10 more minutes immediately after telling us it should be identified as H1N1...lovely. This is our information authority?

What do we do until we find that magical existence? I think you'll see universal health coverage in this country. It's coming weather you want it or not. Right no wit's just a matter of single payer or not. Now that Spectre has switched sides the dems will have a 60% majority when Franken gets seated.

And how do they propose to pay for all of it?

You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

AGREE and I am getting to old to support more of those that think anything from the goverment is free.

Not that many rich people to pay for all. So most of the money comes from middle class, 48% of my money goes to pay for all these hand out.

ohhhhh my god that is so sad. was that yesterday or today, i have not herd that yet on the news. What happens to those that a flu like syptom and no coverage? (like myself) I dont have any syptoms but it makes me think. I dont have coverage, im a pca and they dont offer any yet, and i had free care but my hours when up 10 hour a week and then i lost them, that when they cut my free care, so now i have no coverage lost the extra hours. They should set up free clinics to test for that flu if someone is haveing flue like syptoms. (sorry for the rant)
