SWINE FLU PANDEMIC? Mx, NY, TX, KS...

I do think the media (once again) has blown a situation way out of proportions to the facts on the ground. Last night, here in Western Washington all television broadcasts were interrupted with "Breaking News".... seems 6 *PROBABLE* cases have now been found in Washington. Not even confirmed cases.

It is annoying to watch the media in action when they get into hype-frenzy mode on a story.... but my biggest concern about it is that they damage their credibility with the public... which will work against us when a real emergency occurs and delay the skeptical public from taking actions they should be taking.

I still think this virus should be taken seriously, it is a brand new organism, apparently quite contagious, and nobody really understands much about it at this time and why it is killing healthy young people in Mexico. It could still wind up being a serious problem - but clearly the media is WAY too hyped up on this story at this point in time.

I had to take Emma to the Dr. yesterday....She ended up having a major UTI and they also tested her for Swine Flu....She is the first person at our clinic--let alone Northern WI and possibly the whole state of WI to be tested...We won't know the results until friday(hopefully)....Even though she had the UTI and was sick, because we just came back from TX, NM, AZ, (all around the Mexican border) they tested her....."Kids are germ maginets" as the Dr. put it and because her body is already weak because of the UTI and what not they are testing her as a precaution....She does have some symptoms, but we have been home for 2 weeks now from our trip....
Jason was stationed at Ft. Bliss/Camp McGregor for 2+ months before heading over seas, he had his family pass over Easter, the rest of the unit/batallion had it the weekend of the 18th...These guys are now all over in Kuwait--going to Iraq....If they happened to contract 'swine flu' before going over seas, can you imagine the uproar that can cause....From someone elses own words in his batallion 'the guys more than likely wouldn't be treated for that, because it'd probably be brushed off as they aren't climatized for the Iraqi conditions'......kinda scary.....

sorry for the rambling...

Best wishes and our prayers that she is well soon and clean of the virus.

Run-a-muck, that is why they are finding so many cases of "swine flu". They are testing for it.

The first two cases here in Texas were two teenage boys. After reading in the paper, I think those boys had the right attitude. Yeah, I got sick, but now I feel better, ya know, I had the 'flu. Not a direct quote, but definately sums up the attitude of the quote.

They are testing many people who have recovered from the 'flu for swine 'flu antibodies. They are finding cases because they are looking for them. There is a very good chance this disease has been going around in the US for several weeks to a month.

Mexico gets over 20 million tourists a year, from all over the world. World travel makes virus travel easy.....

As a reply to the Spanish flu epidemic....certain practices of the day contributed to the spread. Leftovers for soldiers and restaurants went back into a common pot. Medical practices were not nearly as antiseptic as they are now, fewer people traveled so there was more of a virgin feild affect, especially with soldiers from rural areas; there were no antibiotics to treat the secondary infections caused by the 'flu. There were a whole host of things that contributed to the deadly effects of the virus.

I'm still more worried about the confirmed case of whooping cough at my son's school.

Utah is usually one of the first to have flu or other disease arrive from distant points in the world.

They arrive at the SLCIA from almost every country around the world each and every week.

AMEN to that!

Why can't they concentrate on tax cheats... like the U S Secretary of the Treasury and his good buddy Hank Paulsen? Or former heads of Freddie and Fannie? Or the senator from CT? Or the congressman from MA? Or the investment bankers who bundled all the bad loans? Or the evil folk who run ACORN?

Doubt we'll ever see any of the above.

No the next thing will be the torture trials. They'll be too busy trying to restore the USA's reputation to bother with people that were careless on their tax returns.

Ah yes the investigations that will show the world how truly weak we are.

Ah yes, the "water boarding" that literally SAVED Los Angeles from a 911 type attack. It occurred many, many times during the Clinton administration, but oh, yeah, that was OK then.

All the world knows now is we are a weak nation because of our new leadership.

Mild as in 60 of those "healthy adults" are now DEAD.

Redhen, protect your pets! and yourself!... we can't afford to lose you!

That may be similar to the death rate in a "normal" influenza outbreak in Mexico.

The regular old "flu" is deadly too - has been forever.

From the CDC website "it is estimated that, on average, approximately 5% to 20% of U.S. residents get the flu, and more than 200,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu."
Just from the "regular" run of the mill flu. 36,000 I would think that would be considered a "pandemic".

This is exactly right. That is how they found the "first" case here in AZ. The child has already recovered and was back at school on Monday. They still have closed down the school he attended for a week. The powers that be are creating panic in a situation where a simple "heads up" would be sufficient.

Couldn't agree more!
