Swinhoe

This is probably the coolest of the Lophura . You get all the best qualities of the other species all in one bird plus they have some of their own neat behaviors very unlike any other species of the genus. The colours of both sexes are something you can never quite get enough of. The female is truly all cinnamon and spice and ginger and pepper and marbled oak leaf- just an astonishing creature. The male is red white and blue with a twist- he's neon red white and blue. In Taiwan where they are endemic, aboriginal people know them as (Formosan) Fiery Wing Mountain Fowl (Kalij). Where firebacks whir their wings revealing exquisite jeweled and burning embers of plumes on the lower back, the fiery wing's shoulders exhibit the fiery hot hues. Its back are like ice fire- and they jump around like kangaroos in the spring with rhinoceros profile- impossible to describe. The females nest off the ground and actually carry their chicks to the ground. They live in strange social network-can't quite figure that out- a bit like Sri Lanka Junglefowl with males remaining in fairly close proximity to one another -and lots of them not like other typical Lophura- more reminiscent of the crestless firebacks -but not social like they are.
