Could someone help give me. I always rescue baby birds around my house from storms ect. I have 2 baby doves. nest fell apart during storm. they looked about 4 to 5 days old. its been 3 weeks now and one doing great ready to fly the 2nd one is having problems. Been a week now and noticed he stopped growing and his butt before popp area is swollen. He or she is popping Ok, so I bought Duramycin-10. I give 4 times a day. It's day 3 and no change. I'm keeping it warm and he/she is eating. poor thing can't stand or really walk because back end so swollen.
Will he/she survive? what can I do? Can't take to vets due to cost and since I rescue and even hath eggs I find can't afford to take wild birds to vet all the time. Money very tight.
Can somone tell me whats wrong and what I can do to help it. I really hope he makes it. Got really attached to that one.

Thank you
Karen

Is the vent area covered in poop(similar to pasty butt)? Wash bottom,is there a wound?

Here is a link dealing with illness in doves.

Once on site,go to caring for injured or sick doves.

No, when I first noticed it was swollen I soaked butt in warm water and been giving it olive oil. and keeping butt clean. he/she is pooping. Since I ruled that out I was thinking bacteria infection. Have been doing alot of reading about this issue in birds but don't know what else to do except keep giing him Duramycin-10.
Thank you so much for replying. Do you know what I can do for him. Right now I noticed his mouth opened and seems to be breathing funny. I wonder if I gave him too much Duramycin this morning or if he's getting worst.

Is he drinking, and is grit available? Breathing funny is not a good sign. I would stop the Duramycin because you are not sure what is wrong, and it is not working.

he is still to young to peck at food or drink on his own, hand feeding. I just checked and he's breathing normal now and looking around. I guess it's a wait and see. I will keep doing what i have been since he has made it this far and is still eating and puffing up like baby birds do when wanting food.
thanks for your help!
