This is Morgan. He's a 8 month old Golden laced Wyandotte. Yesterday I noticed his eye was a little swollen but thought nothing of it because he and his brother squabble alot. Today his eye is foaming and has this white bit sticking out. I wiped it but didn't want to pull on the bit despite my husband saying I should. I don't know what that is. How can I help him?

First make sure he is up to date on deworming, give him a dewormer asap if not. The same or following day, start on antibiotics. What do you have available?

Can you look inside on the roof of his mouth for any sign of yellow spongy material?

This infection is respiratory, tilosin is a first antibiotic you can try. If it doesnt improve with tylosin, there are others. Be careful giving any eye drops or water in the eye, if can push the infection deeper and best case lose the eye, worst case suffer a lot.

You can assune this is mycoplasma MG and coryza for now, but if it doesnt clear up it can become other sorts and require other antibiotics.

His eye is still open and no you dont want to rub it a lot, it is very painful.

Supposed to be getting tylosin in the next hour. I also have amoxicillin if that's useful. I only wiped it clean with a warm cloth to get the foam off. Should I treat his brothers as well or wait to see if they have symptoms too?

Are you getting Tylosin that goes in the water or Tylan injectable?

Only treat the birds that are symptomatic. Foam in the eye can be an indication of MG, so treat with the Tylosin. MG has no cell wall, so the Amoxicillin will not be effective.

You have a hen in another thread that is not well either?

Are the birds new to your flock or have you added new birds within the last 30 days?

Tylan injectable. And yes, Helen has been having trouble breathing since last Friday. They aren't new. Helen and the Golden laced have been with us since August last year.

Be sure you clean and disinfect the waters. Clean habitat, especially waters is essential for preventing this. Hopefully it clears quickly for you. I have seen puffy eyes like this improve in a day, but also seen them worsen. It depends on what is really going on.

I will make sure to clean all waterers today. I have shut him and his brother into a secure area so they can't wonder about until we get everyone better. What should I use to disinfect? Vinegar?

Clean his eye twice a day with saline or a clean wet washcloth, and apply a dab of Terramycin eye ointment or plain Nesoporin into the eye. Just dishwashing soap and clean water with a small scrub brush is all I use. Change and clean waterers daily.

You dont have to use chemicals, as long as you clean them it will reduce the chance of illnesses. I dont even use chemicals, just an abrasive sponge and scrub the waterers under water. But i have rainwater and natural ponds, but the seven waterers that I use I keep clean and scrub every other day at least. I noticed that having cleaner water reduces problems.

Bleach or iodine would work too. Vinegar isnt really a strong disinfectant, but more important is just using an abrasive sponge and water.

How is the eye swelling doing?
