Hello Everyone!

I have a Welsummer hen approximately 18 weeks old who I just noticed tonight (7/9/2012) with a slightly swollen eye lid. Makes her look sleepy, poor Daisy girl. None of my other 5 chooks have any eye problems. She didn't seem to be breathing funny and there is no mucous.

Did she just get poked by something? Bee sting? Or is this something I need to be very cautious and worried about? I'm also bringing my last 2 Roos to a Poultry swap on the 15th, should I not go because of her eye thing?

Thank you for all your help!

Had to hold her beak to keep her still long enough...silly chicky...kept trying to eat the 'flash ready' little orange light!

Have you brought in any new birds lately? Have you had her her whole life?

Oh! Sorry forgot that part.

Yes, I've had her since she was about 3 days old, and have not added any new birds ever.

I go out and check out my flock at least twice a day. Morning and Evening. They are supervised free-range birds for about 2-4 hours in the afternoon after the heat dies down. Other than that they are in a coop with a fan and other niceties.

If there's anything else you need to know just ask.

I would keep an eye on her, but not do any treatment as yet. It doesn't seem severe enough to fiddle with. It almost looks like a bite/sting, which will pass on its own.

Let us know if it should get worse.

Good luck.

One of my hens has a round swollen spot on her face as well. It is not the lid though- but rather the "red" skin between the eye and beak. I thought it was a bee sting or other bug bite- but it has been about a week now since I noticed it. I have not treated it- as I figured it would just pass...... hmmm......

Thanks CMV

As an update - this morning and again this lunch time I've checked her and she's not changed. It's no better, but also no worse. Daisy's attitude hasn't changed at all either, still comes running for treats, still eating well and digging in the compost like a chick on her way to China.

I'm thinking that it's some kind of bug bite/sting or there may be a piece of something stuck in her eye.

There are a lot of those going around. My daughter is sporting more bug bites than I can count. I have 7 deer fly bites on one arm alone and a nasty white-faced hornet sting on my instep (OUCH!!!). I'll bet she got nibbled on by something, poor girl.

Hi everybody

this is an updated picture from this morning. It seems to be a little worse than 36 hours ago, but she's still not acting funny. The whole area around her eye is starting to look puffy.

How long should I let it go before I do something about it? And then...what DO I do about it?

Is the other eye OK? Any foaming in the eye? Is there any chance she could have been exposed to a respiratory illness?

The other eye is fine, along with all the eyes of my other birds.

I have no idea HOW she could've been exposed to a respiratory bug...I am going to clean the coop out and disinfect it all with a diluted bleach solution as soon as the shade comes around, and also clean out all the old bedding and toss it. Along with the roost, feeder, waterer...etc etc.

I've got my TSC holding their last bottle of Tylan 50 for me until I can get down there tonight...I found this https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/679609/swollen-eyelid-and-swollen-flesh-around-eye/10 and this is exactly what looks like is going on with my bird.

I'm thinking of treating Daisy, and giving small doses for a few days to the rest of the flock to boost them up in case there is something floating around. What do you think?
