Swollen eye, puss leaking out...What is going on?!?!?!

I'm having the same problem with my Japanese banty roo, I tried Sulmet because thats the only thing the local feed store had and I came on here to find out where to order Tylan for chickens. You might be able to find Terramycin ointment and Tylan at your local feed store or maybe TSC, if not you might need to order it online or call a vet to see if he has some. You can put Tylan in the search and go from there also.

Hope this helps.

please try and be a bit patient, someone with an answer will come along, its just many people arent logged in 24/7 and a lot of people will not reply if they dont know what to say to help, it doesnt mean people dont care

someone who can help will be along soon im sure

is it possible seeing as he is bottom of the pecking order that another roo (or hen) has pecked him in the eye? i think for the first day or two its going to be a case of cleaning the dirt/pus away from the eye (as gently as you can, you dont want to irritate it further) and see if the swelling begins to subside, then you can get a better look at the eye underneath.

ive had many a chicken whos got pecked/something in the eye (dust, straw, piece of food/dried leaf!) thats then swollen up and/or infected. seperate the roo from the others, keep him inside where you can keep a good eye on him and keep the eye clean. ive read here that some people put a cream/drops in the eye (sorry dont know the name of the stuff) its like an antibacterial eye wash...perhaps that is worth a try?

yes if you have a vet that see's chickens it may be worthwhile (and will put your mind at ease)

Thanks. Hes still clucking away. maybe ill give him a banana slice in a bit, just a nice treat. I think he misses his family...

I've had this happen. Her eye looked terrible, and smelled even worse. I got out as much gook as I could and kept it cleaned out, no meds seemed to help my girl. She did live and is doing good - it's been since late summer that this happened. She cannot see out of that eye anymore, but gets along just fine. Still flies to the highest point to go to bed, and free ranges outside. I have no idea what it is, or why it happened, but exactly the same symptoms as your little man. Just keep it as cleaned out as you can. I tried sulmet & terramyacin - all to no avail, so I can't recommend any meds for you to try. just the cleansliness. If you do take him to the vet please update us, as I would love to know what was going on. Hope he does well for you!
