Hi, all! Yesterday I noticed one of my hens had a swollen eye. I checked on her again this morning and her other eye seems a bit swollen, too. She also sound a bit gravelly when she breathes, like she has mucus in her lungs or something. Any ideas as to what this is/what I should do? Thanks in advance!

She might be showing signs of a chronic respiratory disease such as MG or coryza. Those cause sinus infection and conjunctivitis (pinkeye.) Does she have a bad odor around her face? Coryza is said to smell rotten. Are their any bubbles or foam in an eye? I would get some Tylan (tylosin) which is only available online, and treat only her. Make sure that she is drinking well. Consider all of your birds as carriers, and it would be best to close your flock to any new birds. Dosage of Tylosin is 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days. Here is a link about diseases and one for the Tylosin:

I don’t see any bubbles or puss or anything like that. It kinda just looks swollen. I recently introduced some new birds to them but they were quarantined for a few weeks. I don’t notice any odor but I’ll have to check in a bit. I was reading a bit the other day about rinsing the eyes with saline water. Should I do that?

If there is eye drainage or pus in the eyes, you can rinse with saline eye wash, and apply Terramycin eye ointment twice a day. Here is a handy link for most common diseases including the most common respiratory diseases—infectious bronchitis or IB, mycoplasma gallisepticum or MG, ILT, coryza, and aspergillosis:

MG is more common disease, and causes swollen eyelids or face. Coryza is the other one, more serious, that causes facial swelling around sinuses, along with thick yellow nasal secretions. ILT does not cause facial swelling, but can cause blood-tinged secretions form the beak. Most all of the diseases can cause sneeze or cough, rattly or congested breathing, watery eyes and nasal drainage.
