Swollen eye

I have tried to find someone local that has experience with this but have not been successful. She has has 3 doses of Tylan and that's done nothing for her. So I guess I will have to wait for the other incision to heal before we try again. Think I should keep her on the Tylan longer or stop at 3 doses?

Did you ever notice a bad smell about her head. Her eye looks more like coryza, and the sulfa drugs treat that one better, especially sulfadimethoxine (Di-Methox.) Usally you have to get it online, but sulmet will also work. Tylan will treat it, but Di-Methox is supposed to be best. Coryza symptoms take weeks to get over, I have read, and of course it is never cured. Here is a link:http://www.jefferspet.com/product.asp?pn=A2-DA&green=2ddf7002-2e9e-ce46e9-a9ce-a28fde95babc

Saw your post over in the NH thread. Not sure if you would want to drive to see a vet (I totally understand if not), but if you are open to it, there is a vet in Marlborough, NH that sees chickens: Dr. Robert DeSena at Marlborough Veterinary Clinic. He was great when my flock had some digestive issues. It does look like it might be a good 2 hour drive for you, so that might be a little extreme- I wonder if you could call his office and see if he'd do a phone consult with you?

Good luck- wish I had any suggestions but eye injuries are way outside my basic knowledge...

She has been on Tylan for over a week and she is just getting worse you can't even see her eyeball now. I called a local vet that used to work on chickens but he never called me back. I guess there is a another vet called Blackwater in Salibury that treats chickens so I'm going to call them tomorrow. I have been flushing it out a few times a day but nothing is helping. I hate to spend money at a vet for a chicken I didn't pay more than a $1 for but I also don't know what the "worse case" would be for her with the swelling is getting worse I hate to see her suffer. (not to mention my boyfriend is not an animal fan)

She ended up passing away. She was a carrier of Marek's disease and that's what got her in the end. I was giving her tylan for a few days and then tried metacam after a few days on that the swelling was going down and she was able to open the eye but then she started having green poops and stopped eating and drinking. That night she was gasping for air and I knew at that point she didn't have much time left. She died in my arms a few hours later. I really think the Tylan and Metacam is what helped her eye. Marek's disease in an awful thing!
