I love my australorps! They are sooo pretty and sooo fun! I crossed Ghost iwth a Golden Laced Wyndotte roo and her son looks just like her, though right between his shoulderblades a few feathers have been coming in grey with red lacing. Its soooo pretty!

ACV is apple cider vineger. See if you can get the unpasturized kind. Here it comes in a dark glass bottle rather than a plastic container. Some people say to use the kind with "mother" in it that you can buy at a health food store. I dont know of any health food stores within a decent drive of here so i jsut get the unpasturized stuff.

Funny you should mention this, when I went to the pet shop to get the antibiotic, the shop assistant ask me if she can help me and what bird do I have, I told her my chicken is sick and her reply was "oh, it's just a chicken", I got pretty annoyed, my reply was "it's MY PET chicken, not JUST a chicken". I think she realised she was being rude and said "oh of course"...people can be so rude, even when they should know better..being in the business of animals and all.

Its very alien to some people that something we eat can be a pet too. But we love them just the same as some people love dogs or cats or parakeets! lol

Slowly but surely Ive been changing peoples minds about chickens around here. I pamper and coddle them all the time. My pharmacist is getting to know me pretty well when i come in looking for certain items. She always helps out. Her Mom raises meat birds, but no pet chickens, so she gets a laugh out of all the things I buy, like bandages, epsom salts, etc.

The only difference between the unpasturized and the plain old vinegar is there may be some vitamin loss with the process. The amount isn't really anything to worry about. For something like this I would want it for the 'thinning' abilities it has. It may make the drainage go better so this goes away and doesn't come back. Some threads I've seen, tell you to go right for the Neosporin ointment and put that to it. If you can get it, it wouldn't hurt. It may go in deep enough to help kill some of the bacteria. Me, I like betadine. Not on or in the eye, but outside. Paint a small bit of it onto the lump, it dries pretty fast and again the next day. Betadine and/or iodine tend to get into the tissue deeper than the ointments.

When my old hens got attacked and killed by a dog, I cried for a full day. When I told my friends they just laughed and said they were just chickens...you are right, people can't get their head around it, even my vegetarian friends.anyway, I love them that's the main thing

Out of curiosity what are you using Epsom salt for? I got bags of it because of gardening.

Betadine and/or iodine tend to get into the tissue deeper than the ointments.

The attitudes of people is universal I think. Even people who have kept chickens and other livestock seem to have the same views. They're just chickens...chickens are stupid....they have no feelings so it doesn't matter. Yeah. I hate to say it, but up until 2 years ago, I could have been on the outskirts of one of those camps of thought. I thought they were dumb and wanted nothing to do with them. Since then I've learned that I was the dumb one and that chickens are not. They just have a different agenda and really do not care about yours, lol.

One of my hens had bumble foot, I sat her in warm water with epsom salts to soften the scabs and make it easier to clean. I also used it on Ghost when she was acting egg bound a while back. A warm bath in the stuff can relax them. I have read, but not tried, that feeding it in small amounts once in a great while can clear blockages in the gut and clean the system. Ive not given it internally, but some people have and liked the result.

This is so very true. Instinct drives them to be panicky and people see that as stupid. But you watch a chicken and you can see there are some things going on inside that little noggin. My Ghost is always the first one waiting for treats, she is also the first one to check things out. Dragon, my favorite hen, is the bog queen of the flock, but she is gentle, curious and KNOWS she is pretty, its in her manner.

I dont spend as much time with my girls as some people do, so Im sure I could train them if i wanted, but i know some people have trained their birds to come when called, by name! now THATS cool!

Like I said...pretty birds! I too have the DC and love those crazy buggers! I just got in 2 orders of chicks last week and this past monday. I am drowning in birds right now. 168 is what I ended up with. Not by choice either. I ordered 46 birds from a local farm store, plus 20 meatbirds and 4 Chinese geese. All of the chicks were vaccinated for Marek's and when I picked them up, the manager decided to give me all of the extras that were vaccinated. Twenty something.... My order from McMurray's, 55 birds, with 2 losses so far, came with 62 birds. I so need my head examined!
