Swollen Feet on Hen

no scabs on her feet just swollen legs. after 3 days of penicillin injections she seem better but not right yet. we also treated her for the leg mites. still limping not totally better, she isn't a year yet, almost though. Is that young for gout? I can only imagine that gout is not cureable, just a life long condition. In that case, what to do?

I hope someone can help! I don't know anything about gout, but I'm sure others do. This looks a little odd for leg mites I think. If it were me, I'd keep up the antibiotics a little longer. 3 days isn't a really long time. I had a very sick hen with pnemounia and it took antibiotics a solid week or so to show improvement.

I really hope you can cure this fast.

This is what gout looks like on my 5 yr-old plymouth barred. Antibiotics and Allopurinol have her feeling perky again, but the vet says the swelling will probably stay.

I'm thinking my leghorn hen, Ruby has bumblefoot. I'm going to go look for the black scab patch thing now. Really glad I found this post and you all were so helpful. Thanks.

This is Ruby in the tub, soaking her feet. She seemed to enjoy soaking her feet. It was pretty funny. I had the water warm and about ankle deep on her. I put the antibiotic ointment on her and put a Dr.Sholls pad over it. That didn't seem to bother her, I had expected her to fight me on it, but really, she was great.

This is a picture of her feet. Everyone says that it causes pain, but she doesn't act like anything is wrong. That foot just concerns me and there was definitely a brown/black plug on the bottom of the foot.

Hi. I would still treat for mites. I would give Penicillin for 5 days, I do 1/2 ml. Feel the lumps and see if you feel any hard kernel, or just swelling.

Try to watch and see if her comb ever turns blue, esp, while she's eating. I would consider cardiac either way.

I don't know anything about gout-I must study. So I have no opinion on gout.

The red thing on her right foot is just a spiral ring so I can tell my girls apart. The left foot has the swelling and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. She doesn't act like an animal in pain, but that swelling does not look okay.

We named the girls to go with the color of their bands, it just makes it a little easier.

Red - Ruby
Blue - Indigo
Brown - Eartha
Black - Metallica (Tally)
Red/Purple - Delilah
Purple - Violet
Green - Hunter
No Band - Spaz

TOO Funny but good idea with the bands.

I was talking about the pictures in post #1. It looks like the hen's had "blow outs" on her feet.
