Swollen hen foot, need treatment advice

Good job, Chicken Mom! I am glad that you are helping her to heal! I hope that she does well.

As with human bones, I believe that you should splint, wrap & leave it for a period of time, to give the leg bone a chance to knit. As oppose to taking it down daily.

How long are you leaving it splinted/wrapped between dressing changes? Anyone have any specific time line about this based on experience (I don't & am not being critical.)
I have read once per week changing the splint was successful, so far its been 4 days. I will tomorrow though because she laid her bum leg in poo and got the outside of the wrap messy. Then I hope to leave it for a week.
Thanks for the encouragement!! much appreciated :)

Here is Ethel hanging out with us watching a little tv :)
Changed splint yesterday, things are looking GREAT!
No discharge or bleeding on pad at all, swelling and redness gone way down.
Her foot looks really good now too.
I do believe it is healing! :clap
Looks like she will have a lump in her leg but thats ok.
She is in Chicken Jail outside today, no perch. She is so happy to get to peck around outside.
The sisters keep gathering outside the jail to look at her and gossip.
We only gave 1/3 baby aspirin the first day and a half, none for 4 days now.
*Sigh of relief* I think it's gonna be ok now.:fl

Update- Ethel went back outside 2 weeks ago, with the splint still on, segregated in her own area during the day in the run, in our second small coop with 1 buddy at night. We did that for a few days, then let her mingle during the day for a couple days and she seems to still be bottom of pecking order, but nothing serious. She still has a splint on, weve changed it and checked her leg-washed, veterycin and antibiotic ointment, wrap, 4 pieces of popsicle stick, them sticky purple wrap over that. Her leg has a lump in it, but its almost 5 weeks later now and she only occasionally limps a little. I'm nervous about taking the splint off, I will probably leave it on until its been a full 6 weeks and then maybe observe her for a day without it? aaah.
Im so glad its healed though!! I miss our night time tv watching buddy though :(

I didn't see this topic until this post, but I'd like to offer a suggestion... ramps! I have had a couple girls that were limping for one reason or another and put in ramps, so they didn't have to jump down from high spots if they didn't want to. It's amazing how many of them use the ramps. Our "coop" is a 10x10 refurb'd horse stall and I have boards at all different levels for them and ramps to go from one level to another and they love them. Even the ones that have never limped. Sometimes they will come down the ramp to where it is only a foot or two from the floor, then will jump down into the shavings. BTW, I'm glad that Ethel is doing so much better. :)

If there is no open wond don't wrap it ,you could interfear with circulation. It could be bumble foot that hasn't ruptured .If that is the case it will feel mushy. Also appear to to swollen in a ballon like shape .if it is a sprain the swelling will be in the whole foot .sorry can't tell looking at the pics on my phone.

So, I know that it's May (already!) but I wanted to ask after your Ethel. How is she doing?? I'm assuming that no more news is good news & that she is back to normal chicken life.

You said that she was your most skittish hen prior to her injury. How is she with you now??
