Swollen "jaw" on Roo ***Pics Added***

Ok. Got a look inside I his mouth. All clean and pretty except one small place on the top beak that looked kind of like a small, nubby yellowed tooth.

I felt the swollen place and it seems to be on his lower jaw, not his neck and it is a solid, smooth, round mass that does not move.

I forgot to do the sniff test but my nose is pretty sensitive and I was pretty close so I think I would have noticed a smell.

I think the mass may be some type of tumor but I don,'t know about the upper beak thing.

What do you guys think I should treat with now? I don't expect the tumor can be cured but what about the the other?

I wish that I could tell you what it is. Tumors are so common in chickens, but anything around the face can resemble MG, coryza, or canker, also. Keep looking inside his mouth and throat every day or so, and to notice if he has other symptoms.

None of the nasties mentioned can be cured, but they can be treated to alleviate symptoms. Usually those symptoms are respiratory in nature, except in the case of canker. Without any visible plaques, though, it is not really presenting like canker. In fact, in the absence of any other (respiratory) symptoms, he is not really presenting typically in any of those diseases.

I am guessing (and this is just a guess without more info) it is either a tumor or an abscess. An abscess is pretty easy to rule out. Aspirate some of the contents of the mass with a hypodermic needle. If it is just blood then it is not an abscess. If it is pus or cottage cheese-like then it is an abscess. I would think that a tumor would have been more slow growing. This thing's rapid arrival makes me think he may have an abscess.

But what to treat it with? If it is respiratory then Tylan 50, but if it is an encapsulated skin infection PenG would be the drug of choice. Tylan can work in both cases, but won't actually get rid of an abscess without lancing. It will prevent the pocketed infection from becoming systemic, though. I think I would lean toward a course of that and see what comes of it. If the swelling subsides then he had a regular infection and you need to explore the diseases mentioned earlier. If he shows no change then you are back to the tumor/abscess question.

If you do decide to treat him with an antibiotic remember to treat him with a probiotic during treatment and for several weeks after. Antibiotics tend to kill all bugs- good and bad. A probiotic is essential to maintaining the bird's gut health.

Thank you. It seems to have appeared rapidly, however, I don't regulary inspet his face up close and when I do I'm ganerally focusing on his beak length to see if it is trimming time.

By the feel of it, it is a solid mass like amarble, hard, not squishy, so I am inclined to think tumor and not abcess. Also it seems to be between his wattle/neck skin and attached to his jaw, not inside his throat or mouth. Being a tumor, I realize there is no treatment.

I woder more about the toothy/kernal inside his mouth. Not sure if I can get apic of it or not. What is it possobly? Start of canker or something else?

Thanks.
