Hard to see wattle from picture,but my guess is a wound that has become infected. Is wattle hot to touch? See if you can determine if "black spot" is a scab. You can try cleaning wound with hibiclens antiseptic wash,dilute 1-2 Tablespoons in 1 cup of warm water,clean wound,or if no hibiclens use a diluted peroxide solution 1-2 T in 1 cup warm water. Apply antibiotic ointment(nothing ending in "cane/caine") toxic to chickens.


If swelling does not go down,you might have to squeeze/pull out pus/infection,then clean/apply ointment.

Could she have gotten her wattles frostbitten by getting them wet during one of the extreme cold nights? Besides fowl cholera, infectious coryza is one of the more common causes of swollen wattles. Does she have any watery eyes, nasal drainage, throat rattles or wheezes?

Hey everybody,
Here is an update on Frizzy.

We put some Duramycin 10 in their drinking water. We rubbed Bag Balm on her swollen Wattle. The wattle was warm. ~~There was a black spot on one side of the wattle. Could be a blood scab...not sure.

She was so sweet when we were putting the Bag Balm on her....she's such a good little girl. I am hoping tomorrow or the next day we'll see some improvements.

I'll update everybody tomorrow.

Hello everybody,

Here is the update on Frizzy today.

This morning after all 12 chickens were up....several of them started picking on Frizzy's Wattle. We quickly separated her from all of them. (Fortunately, the way we built our coop....we have a door that can be closed to separate the two sides.)

So, she spent the day on the other side of the coop, by herself, with the medicated water and Bag Balm.

Tonight, the Wattle looks a little better. (Definitely not worse.)

She is really eating good and drinking plenty of water. We put in a perch and a small bed for her and she can chose which way she wants to sleep tonight.

We have a Silkie name Suzy and she's not an aggressive chicken at all.....so....we brought her over to be with Frizzy. And as I thought, Suzy did fine. She doesn't pick on Frizzy at all. So, I feel MUCH better and I think Frizzy does too.

She and Suzy will have each other to sleep with tonight.

So, all is well so far. Oh, and we reapplied Bag Balm on her wattle tonight.

So glad things are getting better here!
