Woke up this morning to Bruster having swollen wattles and neck area with heat. Wattles are lighter in color than normal. New chicks we introduced 8 days ago were infected. Started the Corid treatment 7 days ago, getting ready to switch to the lower dose. All other chicks and chickens appear fine. Bruster had always been sickly since we have had him - about a year. We isolated Bruster from the rest of the flock. What should we do next and do we treat everyone? This is not frostbite which I've read can cause swollen wattles.

Corid won't help with that, whatever it is. It is strictly for coccidosis. Coryza, fowl cholera, and tick or insect bites can cause swollen wattles. What are Buster's other symptoms, and what symptoms did the new chicks have? Look him over for ticks, since they can cause swollen bruised wattles. Coryza and fowl cholera are treated with Sulmet or sulfadimethoxine. Here is some info about those: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Thank you for your reply. I was able to diagnose coccidosis in the new chicks by reading the discussion boards in backyard chickens. I wanted to post everything that had happened up to Bruster getting sick. Thanks for the link. I'm getting ready to read it now.

If Bruster has any respiratory symptoms, such as cough, rattles when breathing, nasal drainage, runny or swollen eyes, I would treat for coryza. When adding new chickens from another place it is good to quarantine for 30-45 days just in case they have been exposed to certain diseases. But swollen wattles here seems to turn out to be from insect or tick bites many times. Benadryl (1/2 of a chicldren's dose) is sometimes used once to treat swelling if a bite or sting is suspected.
