Jack, still turned in Phaedra’s direction, noticed the pile of plastic, glass, and metal. His eyebrows shot up. “Where did that come from?” He asked, walking nearer to kneel down next to the meager pile. He stuck his hand into the middle of it, then snatched it back as he pricked a finger on some sharp piece of once-phone. He had not discovered his phone in pieces mainly due to the fact that it had fell off his bed after he fell asleep. Even if it had been in one of his many pockets, there was a considerable chance that he would never have thought to look for it. Not like you had reception in a desert.
"That was my phone. Was." Phaedra muttered. At that point, she didn't care. She just wanted out of wherever they were. Adjusting her bag and sword, she continued up the sand dune.
Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be an out of the desolate desert. Yellow-white sand stretched for miles, hazy lines blurring the horizon. A strange, small lizard darted past her, and she tried to ignore the fact that it appeared to have a mouth and several rows of razor sharp teeth running along it's side.
"Where the hell are we?"
Zulema remained quiet, not communicating any further until they were safe away from the Reaper lurking area of the forest. Actually it was quite obvious when you were in their territory, the atmosphere was eerie, the trees were void of birds, a majority of the vegetation was dried out and dead, and numerous fallen trees. She easily weaved through the forest in complete stealth while keeping her crossbow ready with a fresh arrow. Zulema made sure they remained close to the trunks of trees and large boulders while avoiding open spaces where the Reapers usually lingered. As she led Theodore through the very edge of their territory, she suddenly pinned herself up against the nearest tree and yanked Theodore up next to her in close proximity so they were face to face—well, more like Zulema’s face was right in Theodore’s chest. She raised a finger to her lips before xe could muster a word, obviously telling him to keep quiet.

A dark, ghostly figure in its pitch black cloak etched its way into Theodores sight as Zulema held her back to it. The Reaper crept along the path she was planning to lead them across slowly, still oblivious to the two individuals hurled up against the tree in its peripheral vision that was luckily obstructed by its obnoxious hood. But at the slightest turn of it’s head, it would immediately notice them.
Theodore darted closely behind her, amazed at how easily Zulema navigated the forest.
Despite the fact he didn't know the forest, his steps were strangely silent. Xe didn't have a vision of the path, more so just strong intuition, and when they ignored it, they were normally right.

Xe exhaled sharply as she dragged xem close, pulling them both behind a tree. "I mean, you could at least let me take you to dinner first–" He murmured, but quickly took the hint to stay quiet.
His breath was unsteady, eyes locked on her face. But they didn't have to ask why she had done what she did. They sensed and heard the creature before they even saw it, ears twitching ever so slightly.

However, sensing The Reaper did not prepare them for the gut-wrenching, dizzying horror they felt as the creature crept into his sight. Xe looked away from her, eyes widening at the sight, showing just a fraction of his fear of the hooded creature.
It reaked of sheer evil. The seer visions once against plagued him, though unbeknownst to Zulema, unless she look him right in the eye and saw just how spaced out he was. All they saw was rows and rows of yellow teeth stained red, tearing into flesh. Abruptly ended screams echoed in xyr ears, defeaning to only xem.
Ohmygodwhatthehellisthatthing.

In between blackness and visions tainting his view, they watched the creature.
Watched as it paused.
As it's oddly shaped back heaved.
Heaved with uneven breaths that danced at a defeaning volume in their ears.
Watched as it turned.
Ever so slightly—
But ever so slightly was enough.
Enough for the yellow-purple eyes to catch sight of the pair, Theodore's much larger frame just blocking Zulema out of view.

Enough for it to make them it's newest target.

"Oh. Cool, I can work with that," Zayne muttered, scratching the back of his head. Normally he would've found its words somewhat strange, but after his day, that was the least unusual thing.
As Xavier began to stare at him, Zayne shuffled, casting it a weary look. Their large blue eyes gave them an owlish appearance, and paired with very little blinking, he was very quickly unsettled.

"Huh, I found one just like it, back in the caves when I woke up. I also found this," he said, gesturing to the knife on the ground in front of him. "I'm. . . Assuming you got the bow?" A twinge of jealousy flashed through his eyes. He found it rather unfair that Xavier got a bow, and he got a measly little switchblade. Not that he would've known how to use anything other than a knife, but evening the potential playing fields would've been nice.

"Hey, are you okay?' Zayne asked, ignoring their question. "Your leg doesn't look too good. What happened?"
Xavier gave a slight smirk, noticing that Zayne was set at unease with it's presence. They were amused, simply by the fact that they were much smaller and most likely physically much weaker then him. But it supposed with it's bow and behaviour labeled as strange by the majority of humanity, one would be uneasy around them.

"Mhm, I got the bow." It just slightly looked down at the blade, appearing uninterested. "Appears I got a better weapon." It was both a brag and a statement, up for Zayne's interpretation.

At his comment, it's eyes narrowed, gaze falling downwards to look at it's leg. It only then realized the extent of the injury, blood soaking through their torn jeans. "Nothing," they commented with a slight smile, meeting his gaze again, sounding oddly sure of their statement. "It's perfectly fine."

They directed their gaze back to the surrounding forest. "Anyways," it continued, trying to decide the right path to take. "You may come with me if you like. Or not. Your choice."

Zayne pursed his lips, giving a slight shake of his head. “Lucky,” he breathed, glancing at Xaviers weapon. “Well, let’s hope this won’t be something like The Hunger Games. I know who would end up winning that fight,” he said, only half joking. He couldn’t shake the images from his last vision, briefly zoning out as he remembered the feeling of being pierced by the arrow.
God, I hope I didn’t just predict something there.

“—fectly fine.
Zayne blinked, looking back towards Xavier as he heard the last part of its words.
“If you say so, bud.” While he didn’t have a reason to not believe them, he couldn’t help but feel an inkling of doubt. Still, he would listen them until it gave him a reason not to.

He drew his eyes to the ground, landing on the knife. While Xavier didn’t exactly give off friendly vibes, Zayne felt it was safe to pick up the blade.
“If you don’t mind, I’m just gonna— I’ll just grab this, then.” He waiting a moment, looking for approval, before kneeling down to pick up the knife. Brushing off the dirt, he carefully pocketed the weapon.

As Xavier gave permission to follow, he widened his eyes, raising his head.
“Really?” Zayne asked, trying to keep the desperation out of his voice. “I’d love to tag along. I could be your. . . Less impressive sidekick!” He beamed up at them, using his knee to push himself up. He didn’t like the idea of trying to navigate the woods alone, especially if there were more people with bows. Or worse.

Lyra sighed with disappointment as her knife failed, she flung herself at the sides of web cocoon to attempt to break it “help” she called assuming that if anyone else was around they may help her. She continued to kick at the cocoon of web which surrounded her
The sound of loud jabbing, crunching through the snow, drew Fabian's attention. They watched as a massive spider came into view, knocking the snow off the larger trees as it brushed by.

They ducked behind one of the trees, hiding in the shade of the branches, hoping it hadn't seen them.
They weren't scared of much, but they hated bugs with a passion; even though the spider wasn't exactly a bug, it was all the same to them.

"What the hell?" They whispered, the arachnid stopping abruptly at the water's edge. It started spinning its threads, sticking a white sac to one of the trees.

Fabian peeked around the tree, getting a better view of the sac. The spider rattled loudly, striding off into the distance, allowing them to sneak closer, until they were standing directly under the sac.

They weren't going to bother with it, until it moved. A little wiggle, then a muffled noise, then more wriggling. Almost like an animal... An animal that was still alive.

Fabian stepped closer, thinking about how to get up there. They'd have to leave their hammer, but they weren't going to let some disgusting bug eat a cute, little animal.

They started to climb up the tree, carefully picking branches, weaving themselves between the sharp leaves.

When they eventually got over halfway up, they stopped, perching on a branch beside the wriggling pod.
They reached out to touch it, quickly pulling back in disgust. It was sticky, but very powdery, and thicker than they'd thought it would be.

Fabian didn't know how they'd get the creature out, but they had to do it quickly, before it suffocated. And there was only one idea coming to mind: aggressive force.

They snapped a thick branch off, with the intention of using it like a saw, to split enough threads to pull the animal out.

After sawing away for a few minutes, a decent amount of the webbing had split, and they could almost make out the form inhabiting the sac.

"Hold on, little creature, I'm almost through." They sawed away a few more, almost exposing what was inside, pulling at the remaining threads in an attempt to get them off the creature.

(I'm sorry this took so long.)

“Ewwwww” Lyra said shuddering “oh my god thank the heavens you came when you did.” She poked her head out, “thanks for cutting me out, I was going to be that spiders lunch” she explained

Jack’s eyes widened. He reached into the pockets of his pants, then pulled his jacket off from where it was loosely tied around his waist. He rummaged rapidly through the various pockets, but again, couldn’t find anything.
He came to a glum realization. My phone’s gone, stolen, or.. it’s at home.
Jack tied his jacket back around his waist slowly. He trudged after Phaedra, wincing as his sweaty sock-less feet rubbed against his shoes.
Jack stood beside her, squinting at the endless dunes of sand that rolled into the distance around them. He didn’t answer.
After a few more moments of silence, Jack started trudging down the dune, the sand slipping around his shoes like some very dry mud. Which, I guess, it was.

(I’m so sorry but my brain is not working atm XD)

The Reaper jerked its body completely in their direction, a wide Cheshire-like grin spreading across its face so its bright yellow awry teeth were at full display. Instead of speaking like the last one, it gave off rather guttural and sickening noises tore through its throat as it stepped toward them, its elongated black arms stretching out towards them.

Zulema gave a sharp curse underneath her breath, “We were so close..” she whispered upon hearing the Reaper redirecting its course. Taking a few steps back away from Theodore while completely facing xem, she adjusted the crossbow in her hands. “You need to keep going straight past us until you reach the honeysuckle bush and find your way inside to the school bus.” She informed, completely retaining her cool before facing off with the Reaper. She whirled and shot her first arrow at the hideous creature, only for it to be evaded as the Reaper turned into a ghastly black fog and collapse to the ground. No longer under of the protection of the shade casted from the trees around her, the exposure from the sun began to singe Zulema’s hands. Hardly giving any sort of reaction, she glanced back at Theodore.“Get moving, I’ll catch up with you in a sec.” Her voice firm but reassuring.

“Ewwwww” Lyra said shuddering “oh my god thank the heavens you came when you did.” She poked her head out, “thanks for cutting me out, I was going to be that spiders lunch” she explained
Lyra glanced at the sky “actually maybe I would’ve been dinner” she smiled and patted the person on the shoulder “anyway. Thanks”, she looked the human up and down. They certainly seemed human enough, she looked at his hand searching with her eyes for a number at all like the one tattooed onto her hand. She kicked her feet out of the cocoon and fell in a heap at the persons feet, she examined the surroundings from where she lay, grey skies that were getting darker by the minute and snow filled wilderness just waiting to be explored.

But obviously not by her, by some adventurous person who had the guts to risk their lives for humanity and education. Then she saw legs, human legs they seemed, standing beside her. She held her hand up “I suppose I ought to introduce myself, Lyra. I’m Lyra”, she supposed she must have looked strange laying on the snow holding her hand up to the total stranger.
What if he is some axe wielding killer Lyra? You just placed yourself in a very vulnerable position and to be quite frank you would rather take death by a giant spider than by an axe.

NOPE. I would take the axe any day but that’s not the point. The point is if he wanted me dead why would he cut me out of the cocoon?

Use your head Lyra. He cut you out so he can kill you.

The internal argument was rather amusing, she had to admit. Her and her head were really argumentative, particularly with each other. The chill started to set in when it hit her she was laying in the snow. “We should probably move aye?” She suggested.

(I love this. 😭)

Fabian watched the girl plop into a heap of snow at the base of the giant spruce, after slipping through the branches with ease. They were highly disappointed that it wasn't an animal, and was, in fact, some kid.

They shook their head, and proceeded to collect some of the longer strands of web, their stickiness now reasonably decreased, and wrapped them like a rope across their chest.

Fabian carefully climbed back down the tree, following their previous route up, until they reached the bottom. They retrieved their hammer, then turned their attention to the lost child.

A couple of steps took them over to Lyra's side, where they looked down at her, unamused. If there's one thing they hated, it was children.

"Whatever," Fabian sighed, turning away from her and continuing with their journey. They weren't some babysitter, and, besides, they'd done more than enough by saving her life.

It was definitely getting somewhat darker out, but Fabian wasn't going to stop until they couldn't see or move anymore. They had to get home.

“Whoa. I’m sorry, you can’t just leave me out here in the middle of the forest to die! Look at least help me find this other human person Evan and then you can go” she said “please. We don’t even have to talk just um accompany me because I’m clumsy and knowing me I’m going to wind up dead before I get five feet away from here.”

She frowned and realised just how pathetic she sounded. “On second thoughts maybe I will just find Evan by myself” she said “oh well. See ya around human like creature”.

and off she set through the snow back the way she came, or at least, the way she thought she came. She had no idea how to find Evan and the small violent child, but she did know that if she didn’t find them soon then chances were that the spider would come back and maybe the spider would have company. She shuddered even at the thought.
