I’m here for the long hall
Alright. Step 1 is to have a chicken that’s very comfortable around people and happens to be intelligent. One of my other chickens can also do this trick, but she doesn’t do it as well, despite being more food motivated than Popcorn.

First I pretty much just put a mealworm under a red cardboard square. Popcorn had to peck it to get the mealworm. I would tap the floor near the red square to bring her attention to it. Then I would just tap the red square without a mealworm under it. Eventually she pecked it without the mealworm and I rewarded her for that. Once she knew the trick better I started using chicken feed so she didn’t eat too many mealworms.
Then, once she knew to peck the red square when I tapped it/tapped the floor next to it, I put two blue sticky notes right by it. I would reward her every time she pecked the red square. I then started to switch around the sticky notes. She was pretty good at only pecking the red one.
Eventually I added more sticky notes of different colors, which I also switched around. I introduced the new colors slowly, but once she understood I didn’t need to reteach her anything. By then I didn’t tap the ground any more, I just moved around the sticky notes and she would instantly come forward to peck at the red square (sometimes too enthusiastically XD).
Popcorn also learned a variation of this trick where she pecks a star shaped sticky note that has a different pattern on it than the other star shaped sticky notes. She learned what she was supposed to do for that one really fast, but she still hasn’t perfected it. All this took months, but that’s only because I only practiced with her a few times a month. I’m thinking of trying to teach her to play the keyboard next.
