Very small amounts of silicone can create "fisheyes" in the finish. It's because of the surface tension - the silicone has a very different surface tension than paints and varnishes, and the paint will pull away from the spot in a little circle. Autobody shops and other paint spray shops keep a "fisheye remover" product around, that basically adds some silicone to the paint. Then they spray it thru the one gun that's been contaminated. It's a hassle, because by the time you get there you've put one coat of paint on already, and had to sand it down.

Paste wax works pretty good. There are other things, but some of the best are industrial products and hard to find in the consumer market. Look for sprays for saw tops and blades at places like Tool King and others that cater to industrial/professional users. I think some of the woodworking suppliers have versions, too.
