Table scraps

They say some things are toxic and shouldn't be fed, but do you eat raw potato peels? Cooked peels lack the toxins that are potentially toxic, but when I toss out raw peels, my birds just ignore it as there are better things to eat. However, when cooped up and bored, I can see birds gobbling it up just because it's there.

Nobody's mentioned tomatoes. They are all getting ripe at the same time. I have an older hen who'll eat them, diced and peeled, of course! I haven't tried tomatoes with my cochins (2mos.old) Are they too young yet for tomatoes?

Tomatatoes and other fruits, yes they are fruits, if given in a larger amount can actually slow or stop egg laying. Use as a treat, but I wouldn't feed them a lot. No potato peelings.

Ok , I keep reading no potato peelings .. ok , but can you give cooked potatoes with peelings on them ? Or no peelings at all ?

Sometimes yea, a fresh potato washed off in cool water. Yummy! Plus no nutrients are cooked out. Talk about a catch 22 with this one!

Mine have access 24/7 to their food and water. I give them treats of scratch, (oats, sunflower seeds, once in awhile bird seed, cracked corn etc.), in small quanities as these are treats. I also give them vegies, fruits, most everything that I can grow. I do grow a lot of corn and watermelon especially, also tomatoes, squash, root crops, the list can go on. I feed them everything except potatoes, and meat. I figure they will eat what they want. I do free range them. I make sure they have plenty of grit and oyster shells.

One more thing to move into the myth section... Right under "must have a rooster to get eggs" hymm, this myth list is getting long...

I'm pretty new to the chicken thing, but I've been experimenting with different items. (I have Silkies)

They get their regular feed, but I also try and bring them out stuff when I go out there, as I want them to associate me with positive thoughts (they are new, I'm new, lol).

Didn't dig the flavored rice today.
Blueberry and promegranate yogurt--they thought was ok
boiled eggs- LOVE
cut up grapes--LOVE
left over salad ---not so big on
bread--ok
bird seed--a little better than ok
Defrosted frozen veggies--didn't like so much
Pulled up weeds from the yard--like
french fries--not bad
Honey nut cheerios--had a hard time breaking up

Any MEAT they love.

I have a couple of babies, one is about 2 weeks old and the other are about 1.5 months old and they grab pieces of chicken (my husband and MIL think this is seriously wrong, lol) or pork chop and run and holler and don't want anyone else to take it from them. They LOVE it!
