I will say that the school system in which I work has made strong efforts toward proper nutrition regarding what they serve in their cafeterias. And they require students to choose items from each category (fruits/vegie/meat). Schools with high poverty rates generally participate in different food programs. One program brings in healthy snacks daily the for kids - apples, oranges, veggies, etc., and as much as possible is supplied by local vendors.
I know that my son's high school took pop out of machines years ago...not sure about the nutrional value of some of the juice drinks though - maybe just as bad. Salads were offered as a choice every day...
