My daughter was able to take an online PE class. She got full credit for it. She weighed 340 lbs. I thought ir beyond funny that they could do that.
I have seen plenty of fat kids. Lot are obese and some are morbidly obese. The BMI chart is one of the best ways to determine obesity. A doctor can tell if a person is muscular so is carrying more weight than a non muscular person. It's just a guide after all.
Obesity can absolutely be controlled by diet. My family has fat genes. Both parents grew up thin and turned to fat later in life. Me and my 2 sisters started thin and I started getting fat around 7, my older sister had an extra 20 lbs by 14 but met a guy that told her he would leave her if she got fat. She married him and is still thin at 54. She is very careful about eating well. My younger sister turned fat at around 13.
I think it had a lot to do with TV for me. When my parents were growing up they listened to radio programs for entertainment and went to the movies. They both ate foods that were very high in fat, starch, cholesterol and sugar. When I was growing up we had a black and white TV till I was around 8. Then we got color. Every day after school it was TV at the babysitters house. Then more TV at home. We had TV trays and ate in front of the TV. The only exercise I got was riding my bike.
I used to scoff at the idea of genes and metabolism. However we have 5 adopted kids. All from different gene pools. Three of them are skinny as a rail and eat like horses. The other 2 have to watch what they eat and could very easily end up obese if they were given too much bad food or if they stopped their level of activity. Obesity has been coming on ever since the advent of entertainment 24 hours a day in front of the boob tube. High fructose corn syrup has just made it go out of control.
Once they get fat it is hard to come back. The best thing you can do for your kid is keep them from getting fat. Being fat as an adult is bad. Being fat as a kid is horrible. It screws up your self confidence something terrible and affects you through your whole life. You always wonder if you didn't get that job because you were fat. People look at and treat you with less respect. I was fat for my whole life. I got a gastric bypass and lost 125 pounds. The difference in the way people treat me is absolutely amazing. It's also sad. I've never blamed anyone for me being fat though. Too much food and not enough activity. I got a bypass because it keeps me from eating too much food. I also get sick if I eat too much sugar or grease. So it's a control mechanism. Good habits have to be developed at a very young age. Switching when you get older and maintaining that switch is impossible for most people. Anyone who is fat knows that.
Quit blaming society if your kid is fat and do something about it. You control their food intake for the most part. Make sure they don't have spare change to buy that candy at school. Cut out any crap food they like. Take them for bicycle rides. If you're too tired just tie them to the back of the car and drive at a slow pace. They'll come with you. You might want a spotter just in case though.
You rock Al!! Couldn't have said it better myself.
