Taking chickens to a vet question

That's sounds exactly right as my friend who took a chicken to the vet said the bill was $200. I can't even remember what the problem was because I was so busy laughing at her. I just don't do vet's for chickens.....

I'm sure you could also replace your dog or cat for what you you would spend on most vet visits.I sure could. The most I've ever spent to acquire a dog was $150, and all of my cats I've gotten free. Those of us who look on our chickens as pets, feel that we have a responsibility to care for them to the best of our abilities. For some of us, that includes vet visits for things that we can't resolve ourselves. As for the vet, their code of ethics requires them to treat animals, not based on how much they can be replaced for, but on what that individual requires to be healed. Yes, I have taken chickens to the vet, and I will again, if I feel they need it. My vet treats me and my chickens with respect. Unlike your ridiculous post.

People shouldn't belittle others on how they handle their animal's illnesses, some people don't have the luxury of funds or good vets available, some do and choose to use vets, no problem with me either way. Our local livestock vet will come out and put down animals of all kinds, he's very kind and knows not everyone can get their animals into town for the vet and few can stomach doing it themselves. I'd rather my pets died at home in their baskets, instead of on a sterile metal table, in a cold, strange room. But that's me,

AND ME. My animals all get top notch care and consideration from me, right here at my little farm. I actually wrote a poem in College about my dog who died with the smells from puppy hood in his nose instead of the sterile vet's office that he feared so much. When he could barely walk it was me who carried him up stairs because he dam well deserved that. Choosing to not go to a vet is not about a sub-par level of care. I CAN afford a vet and I do use vets when I determine it's the right thing to do. But make no mistake about ethics, some vets are wonderful and honest and others are part of a racket. Unlike us humans, animals have no malice and no tackiness. They don't disrespect others for not sharing their same perspectives and opinions. Chickens who pass away from whatever cause on my farm, lived their very best life. The end.

Our vet costs like $15-$35 to see a chicken. Fecal floats are $15 and office visit was $30 I'm pretty sure.

It just hit me.... BYC IS my chicken vet. I've been able to avoid ever having the dilemma of whether to go to a chicken vet because of this site! This most Excellent community of people with massive chicken knowledge has helped me to fix the 4 health issues that I've dealt with in my 20years.

For starters, I do not not appreciate the dismissive tone towards those of us that do take their chickens to the vet.I'm not dismissive towards those that don't. To each his own. However, the ridiculous part, IMO, is that it would be "ethical" for any vet to tell a client to just forget it, go get another one, they're cheap. Take chickens out of the equation altogether. Say, for example, your dog broke his leg. You went to the vet and they said," gee, why bother with this one, you can get a free puppy in front of Walmart" ? Would that be "ethical"? Vets take an oath just the same as human doctors do. Additionally, vet bills are not based on how much you pay for your pet. They are based on the doctors time and expertise, (years of school and student debt), the cost of running a hospital, including a fully stocked pharmacy and expensive equipment, paying staff, insurance and rent, the cost of remodeling a building with exam rooms, surgical suite, x-ray and recovery rooms, reception space with computers. ECT. None of that changes whether you paid $10 or $10,000 for your pet. I worked in the veterinary field for 15 years. I know a lot of vets. NONE of them are rich.
