Someone is willing to give me a couple of 4 1/2 year old birds. They're beauties -- a Barred Rock and an Ameraucana -- and have led happy, pampered lives. They haven't laid much over the winter. As far as eggs go, think I'll get 4-5 a week out of these gals or would I just be taking on more mouths to feed?

Only guessing....but because of their age, I would expect about 1/2 of the eggs that you are thinking.

But.... I dunno. It's kind of an "individual thing", I suppose.

P.S. Messin' with "older gals" can be "educational"........Ha-Ha.

Does the owner know how much they are laying? At the age they are at, how much they lay starts to depend on individual bird...Maybe 2 or 3 a week if they are good layers. I have had some lay up to 5 a week at that age, but i think thats exceptional.

If you like the birds, enjoy them, feed and care for them..and can get a few eggs a week--I'd say go for it!

But then again, I have ten dogs that are all over 12years old, haven't gotten the first egg but wouldn't trade them for anything
