Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

My coop cost me approximately $1500 in materials back in 2019 , I did all the building/labor . Its 6' wide x 13' long (coop is 6'x5'with attached covered 9' run) . If I were building the same for somebody I would probably ask at least another $1500 or more for labor .
$2000 sounds like a reasonable price for a 10' x 6' coop(a well built coop) , especially given the crazy lumber prices today .

But I honestly feel like a fool paying that much for a CHICKEN COOP! I was fine with $1500... and $1700. But $2k seemed a bit excessive. What do you think? Give me your story.

I paid a bit more than that to buy a 8x10 chicken coop. Aside from a couple of nitpicks that I consider design flaws in the coop, it was well worth the investment since it was in the beginnings of Covid and I didn't have the time to try and build one myself. If you like the design and trust the builder, I say go for it.

My coop cost me less than $1500 to DIY, but I also didn't have to buy roof panels. To pay someone to build it for me these days, I'd guess easily $5k or more. I don't think the $2k is crazy, just take a look at the price of something like a Carolina Coop

How many chickens/ birds do you have in your set up... it sounds similar to what I have and am already trying to figure out if there’s room for 1 or 5 more girls

I have 12 right now that are about ready to start laying. I will likely get a few more chicks within the next few weeks.

I have 10 chicks right now that will be going in there. I figure about 14-15 comfortably will fit. technically with the min #'s I could have 16 in the coop and 20 in the run. But will stick around 14 maybe 15.

Ugh, I'm definitely "ashamed to say." My coop is 6x10. Do I have to say the actual... uh, I'll just say it was at least double your quoted cost, OP. Also that was BEFORE pandemic pricing (and the shed builder was still booked up for months at that price). Labor costs here are skyhigh, so...

And I still had to build the roost and nests myself!

Go on... tell us! Did it at least include a run?

A picture's worth a thousand words....or in this case at least $1,540.

If you priced materials based on the pic provided, purchasing all of your materials at Lowes (about as cheap as you can get), the rough estimate to get you about 90% done is $1540.06. That is with today's current material prices and it would only get the project into the back of your truck.

If there is cost involved with an architect to design it and someone else to build it, you'll pay more. Remember, labor costs always seem through the roof high but no one ever takes into account that that person needs to cover their overhead and make a profit.

While the initial sting of the estimate hurts, after factoring in true material and labor costs, enjoy the good deal!

Are there dimensioned detail drawings too?

That's pretty simple for 2k.
