Tapeworms - A few questions

@IronEagle , you could also use just praziquantil (also sold as Droncit) tablets for dogs and cats. Do *not* use Drontal as it has praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate, which together might be lethal in chickens. Need to find that source to verify, so don't quote me on that just yet.

Kathy,
Thank you for this information. I know a person here close by who does dog rescue. I'm going to ask what she's got on hand. Hopefully I'll be able to find one of these here!

Many blessings,
IE

I know we're talking about treating tapes in chickens, but a double dose of pyrantel is said to treat tapes in horses.

Impolite? No, you stated that praziquantel mixed with moxidectin is toxic to birds aka Quest Plus. Moxidectin Plus (Quest Plus) CAN be used in poultry to treat tapes. I've used it. Dosing must be exact...that's why I dont recommend it. It's much safer to use z-gold or equimax.

As I said, I don't have the info in front of me but I remember reading somewhere that one of the horse dewormers that has praziquantel in it plus another medication happens to be toxic to birds. It must be the prazi/pyrantel (and I can't remember which brand that goes under) as Kathy has stated which is the toxic combo. We must have read the same publication.

Anyone who has had horses through the nineties would know that before praziquantel was widely available, the standard treatment for tapes was a double dose of Strongid i.e. pyrantel. Don't believe me- google it. Lots of people still use it even though the prazi is much more effective against cestodes. But of course, you can't double dose chickens with pyrantel so that point is moot- sorry for mentioning it- train of thought and all.

I do apologize for going off on a tangent about fenbendazole when the point of the thread happened to be tapes. I was thinking of how the person posting lived in a jungle and how many parasites would be attacking her birds as a result. I live in a swamp and so I know firsthand just how many parasitic organisms thrive in hot/wet conditions so my mind went directly to broad spectrum dewormers. AND I am oh so sorry for misprounouncing albendazole.

I remember reading also that certain antibiotics will kill tapes if praziquantel is not available but before I get attacked for posting that little nugget I would recommend researching that info as I found it on wikipedia.

Below is what their website says and a chicken is a galliform, so it should work is you give the correct dose. I know the praziquantil dose needs to be 10mg per 2.2 pounds, but not sure about the pyrantel, so have to look that up.
