Taste of the Wild-update concern on pg. 2

The breeder that Jax and Kane (our 2 GSDs) came from feeds Diamond Naturals, plus raw meat, goats milk and yogurt. We fed Diamond for awhile after we got Kane before switching over to the TOTW. I have no idea what brand of food Jax's original owner fed him, but I'd bet it was the cheapest thing the co-op sells.
I know TOTW is a great food, but when eating it we watched Jax get thinner and thinner. He'd barely touch the stuff. We tried all the different formulas.
Then the one and only store around here that sells TOTW closed early for a holiday weekend and we were forced to buy at walmart. We bought Purina One smartblend, lamb and rice. Jax ate like he had been starved and continues to empty his bowl every feeding. He's finally putting on weight. I was more concerned about Kane eating the Purina One, as he had a sensitive tummy when he was a pup. He must have outgrown his troubles, because he does fine with it now. We supplement their kibble with raw chicken or beef.
TOTW is a great food, but my opinion is that all that goodness is useless if your dog won't eat it.
Both boys are doing great on the Purina One - shiny coats, bright eyes, normal poos; so Purina One it is.

We tried TOTW and neither of my dogs would eat much of it. Then tried a bag of TSC's 4Health, and they did well with that. I'm with Gritsar; if the dog won't eat it, it won't do them any good.

I guess I forgot to mention that I was concerned that TOTW is made by Diamond.. and if I am not mistaken a while back Diamond had an issue where many dogs died.. something with the food... I tend to over think things but really want a good food for my animals.. actually cost is not an issue for me.. I work to feed my animals.. I come second.. I also know my dog really will eat anything.. she by no means is picky..but will stick to land animal protein in lieu of fish.. thanks for some of the feedback..

Oh believe me when I say Taste of the Wild is good. It is the BEST food you can get for what you pay for it. I feed my pack of six dogs this feed, and it has helped a lot. When I first got dogs I ignorantly fed them Royal Canin... crazily enough I was paying MORE for that than I am for TOTW, but on Canin all my dogs would get up in the morning and puke some (probably do to the beet pulp and other grains and such).

But yeah, the two brands I reccomend most to people now are TOTW and Canidae Grain Free. TOTW is only slightly cheaper, and I think a bit better than Canidae, but both are very decent brands.

For people who are really on the cheap and can't afford much, and purchase brands like Beneful and Iams, I strongly reccomend they get Costco's Kirkland brand dog food... it's roughly the same price as brands like Beneful, but many times better. Costco even has a grain free option now!

ETA: I find that funny that people are having trouble getting their dogs to eat TOTW - I had trouble getting some of my dogs to eat Canidae, and only got my litter of pups to wean this last time because I switched to TOTW! They wouldn't touch the Canidae, but they LOVED the TOTW. My dogs love to get their teeth in stuff like Purina One too... there's so many flavorants and the like sprayed on it, they can't help but want to eat it.
What I love about TOTW, also is that it is all life stages (which really, most foods can be, pups just need to eat more than adults). On TOTW, one of my 10 lb shih tzu needs only 1/2 a cup a day, whilst a 9lb puppy eats nearly a full cup, or even a little more. But this means for six little dogs one bag lasts me a month. These guys have had to eat more of other blends to maintain their weight. When breeding, my girls gets TOTW supplimented with lots of raw meat and bones, and high quality canned food (canned because it is difficult to get them to eat what they need to).

I feed my three cats TOTW, and we have been very pleased. I have been thinking about switching my dogs from 4health to TOTW, but my one concern is the ethoxuqiun used to preserve the fish. Do you think that is really a concern?

Unfortunately every pet food company irregardless of quality is at risk of a recall every now and then. This is partly due to the people who make and bag the feed since most companies just use an outside processing plant for it. If they run the wrong stuff through or don't clean thoroughly enough between different items they can end up contaminating the feed/kibble. You will not be able to avoid this 100%. A good company though will be honest about any changes or problems and fix them quickly. Companies like Canidae and Diamond (including TOTW) have been very good about this and even inform their customers when the source of an ingredient is going to be changed. Sometimes they will go so far as to suggest owners with sensitive dogs switch foods until they test the new ingredient source.

The only problem we had with TOTW is that my akita refuses to eat meals to the point of starving herself and the shiba is a garbage disposal. She started to look rather round. We switched the dry food back to diamond naturals and feed 1 can of TOTW to the akita every night along with each of them getting a satin ball (much smaller ones for the shiba) and raw when we can get it. Since we no longer have roosters to butcher they haven't been getting as much raw as they were before.
