Taste of the Wild-update concern on pg. 2

I personally don't think that the ethoxyquin is that big a deal... I am actually (as of right now) exclusively feeding the ocean fish blend of TOTW to my dogs do to one of my girls exhibiting symptoms of possible food allergies. Since switching from the wetlands formula (I switch formulas because I firmly believe that all animals thrive on variety in their diets), she has stopped itching and losing hair... although that could be the medication. I might tentatively try another blend next year when my stockpile of food runs out (pet store had an anniversary sale... buy one get one half off... couldn't pass it up).

The way I see it, dogs lives are shorter than humans, and I think that in the long run it's not going to make them as prone to cancer in their maybe 15 years of life as in a human's 80+ years. The largest causes of cancer in dogs tend to stem from early (before 2-3 years of age) nuetering, which causes bone cancers and a whole other range of things.

What do you guys think of Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul foods? And do they have large breed formula?

I've been feeding TOTW pacific salmon recipe to my 80 pound husky mix house dog for the last 2 or 3 years. I started her out on the Prairie flavor, but she gained too much weight on it. She used to itch a lot, but her allergies have all but disappeared since I switched her over. I feed my outside dogs the Diamond Naturals lamb & rice and they do well on it. I used to feed my housecats the feline TOTW, but no longer can since one of my cats has chronic renal failure and the protein levels are too high for her.

Good quality foods do not actually have large breed, small breed, or sometimes even age difference. Growing dogs of any breed can do just fine on the same high quality food. My akita grew up eating timberwolf and flint river ranch which have different flavors but not separate formulas for breed or age of dog. She has not suffered any health problems from it. Our shiba also grew up on TOTW and Diamond Naturals adult food with no issues. If the food is well balanced with good ingredients the large breed dogs do not have a problem. An animal can grow fast if it's given a very balanced healthy diet. It's the mid-lower quality foods that are often too low in one thing or another and therefore have to keep everything else low to match it and prevent growth issues.

Interesting. I had mine on Purina One and Lucy (my avatar) had itching issues. I switched both dogs to TOTW pacific coast formula. They did great. This last bag I switches to the prarie formula and Lucy is digging at her ears again. It never occurred to me that the formula would make a difference. I though she just had grain allergies. I'll switch her back to the fishy one.

I used feed Chicken Soup brand, but I found it to be very "grain-y" and roughly the same price as TOTW, with the TOTW being better quality. My dogs also didn't really like Chicken Soup... again, just smelling the brand, it smells like grains, which is why I think it was so unnapealing. That being said, it's much better than many foods out there.

@CityGirlInTheCountry Many dogs are allergic to common protien sources, like chicken and beef, or even just poultry. Dogs tend to be less allergic, in general, to fish and lamb.

Thats my problem..
I feed purina one large breed.. and my male has itchy ears and feet..
I'm looking for better quality feed but not as expensive as TOTW..
I feed my male 10 cups a day.. and my female 6 cups a day of purina one..(split into 2 feedings..wet down with water to expand it before it hits their belly)
I'm thinking the chicken soup one will be better for them... or maybe i;ll try the TOTW..
I CANT make up my mind!!!!!!

Yeah, my other dog is a goat. She can eat anything and everything and have no problems. She did great on the Purina One. Dog 2 (avatar pup) is apparently allergic to everything.

For years she had chronic ear infections and chewed on her feet constantly. I tried the Dick Van Patten brand (came off of it due to cost), Nutro Max (took them off after the Nutro scare and Dog 1 started throwing up uncontrollably), Purina One (too much grain), Blue Buffalo (the dogs hated it) and finally TOTW salmon flavor. Lucy has had the least trouble on TOTW. I guess we'll stick with that. I hate it when she scratches her ears uncontrollably.

I've been using TOTW for a while now and all my animals love it. I think it's a good food.

Just so you guys know, TOTW and Chicken Soup is the same manufacturer. TOTW is their slightly better more expensive line.
