Tatanka Breeders Club: Meat Quail project with history, discussion, pictures and videos

Wow I have really enjoyed reading through your thread(though I should probably have been looking at my new biology textbook instead to prepare for classes next week haha) I am just starting out with quail, I have often hatched eggs for other people, but this was my first year doing it for myself. Starting out with 12 coturnix( there were 13, but one passed away unfortunately, they are almost a week old) I am not going to try and do what you are doing right now, since I still have A LOT to learn. Anyways, I just wanted to say keep up the good work, and I look forward to following your progression

My #1 Ta'Tanka F2 "Split" hen, version 2.7.2012 at about 14-15 wks old.

My #2 Split Ta'tanka hen, 390+

#2 lays these everyday

yesterday's egg

came home to a bunch of eggs from last week ready to sort

some of our better eggs from last week all 16+ grams, carton weighs 56g

step down to 14-16 gram eggs laid last week, we call these "jumbo"

step down again to the rest from last week, 81 eggs here in the 12-14 gram range, we call these "large"

and the "outlyer", new layer- the big jamesmarie white hen, definitely double yolker but shows she has the room to make em big.

I am excited here...cant wait til this Fall

Good stuff TD, the girls look quite at home in the new digs. Fine birds in a REAL sweet set up. Two thumbs up! Bill

Holy Cow!!.. That's a big egg.. and I thought my 21 ounzer from last week was "special".. HaHa.. Lookin' good, Moby.

My 21 oz egg is hatching today. It's piped around the shell and moving a lot.. waiting... will advise.

Update.. he hatched. He, like the egg, is about 1/3 larger then the others. I helped him a little and he seems o.k. but has a small piece of egg shell membrane over one eye. I'll let him dry a little more then get that off of him with some warm water and a q-tip. He was a little slow going at first but is upright and moving about like the others.. I'll weigh it when I get him out for his eye work..
Sorry for the thread-jack, Moby.. I'm kinda excited about this one. I hope it's a hen..lol

He's the wet one in the middle...He looks like the others here but they are dried so once he dries more then you'll see the difference..

The big egg with others...

I got the membrane off of it's eye. Both eyes are open and he's looking good.
He is actually double in weight of most of the others..
